Sulwhasoo skincare: what is worth considering at the higher price?
Updated September 8, 2026
A Sulwhasoo basket can go from a $38 face wash to a $602 routine surprisingly quickly. The difficult part is deciding whether you want a nicer version of a step you already use, a new treatment, or simply the pleasure of that amber jar on your bathroom shelf.
Our view: among these full sizes, the cleansers cost the least, while the creams deserve the most careful comparison before buying. First Care is an optional first serum, and the Ginseng Water is a toner. Neither makes the rest of the range compulsory. If fragrance is something you avoid, the seven Sulwhasoo products below are poor starting points: every current ingredient list declares fragrance/parfum.
This Sulwhasoo review is based on current US product pages, complete ingredient lists and three editorial reviews, checked September 8, 2026. We haven't tested the products on skin. Sulwhasoo prices below are the brand's listed one-time US prices before tax, shipping or promotions; texture descriptions are attributed to the brand, and our purchase advice is editorial judgment.
Check the full name when reading older reviews. A review of a previous Renewing Cream or First Care generation doesn't establish the formula or feel of today's Rejuvenating Cream or First Care VI.
What does the higher price buy you?
Sulwhasoo's appeal includes its presentation, scented ritual and focus on ginseng formulations. Enjoying those things is a reasonable reason to spend more. It doesn't establish that a $260 cream will serve your skin better than an affordable moisturizer.
The American Academy of Dermatology says effective skincare needn't be expensive and recommends keeping the foundation simple: cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection. That leaves room for a luxury purchase without turning the whole bathroom cabinet into a matching set. AAD's budget skincare advice.
Before comparing bottles, finish this sentence: “I want this to replace…” A wash that leaves you tight? A cream whose finish you dislike? A serum you're no longer enjoying? If the answer is “nothing,” assess the product as an optional purchase and give it an optional budget.
The two cleansers: choose by what you need to remove
Gentle Cleansing Foam — $38 for 200 mL
This is a gel that lathers, despite the foam name. Sulwhasoo describes a cushiony wash with a semi-dewy finish. Its cleansing ingredients include potassium cocoyl glycinate, disodium cocoamphodiacetate and cocamidopropyl betaine; fragrance, limonene and linalool are also listed.
The main directions specify lathering two pumps, massaging onto damp skin and rinsing with lukewarm water. The page permits use alone or within a double cleanse. Current Gentle Cleansing Foam.
Consider it if you like a pump bottle and a scented, foaming wash. At $0.19 per mL, it's a smaller financial commitment than the leave-on products. If your current inexpensive cleanser already rinses away comfortably, there isn't a clear functional reason to replace it just to start using Sulwhasoo.
Gentle Cleansing Oil — $40 for 200 mL
The oil has a different job: dissolving sunscreen and makeup before rinsing. Its formula combines cleansing esters and emulsifiers with oils, including coconut, sesame and apricot kernel oils. It also contains fragrance.
The main directions say to massage two pumps over dry skin, add lukewarm water to emulsify, then rinse clean. Don't apply it like a leave-on facial oil. Current Gentle Cleansing Oil.
It's the more relevant of the two when removal is the problem you're trying to solve. The price works out to $0.20 per mL. Buying both cleansers costs $78, so first decide whether you actually want a two-product cleanse. A matching pair is convenient to shop, but convenience alone doesn't tell you how much cleansing your face needs.
First Care and Ginseng Water: two optional layers
First Care Activating Serum VI — $89 for 60 mL; $110 for 90 mL
First Care goes immediately after cleansing, before toner. Sulwhasoo describes it as a lightweight first serum. The current formula lists alcohol denat. second, followed by ingredients including butylene glycol and betaine; fragrance, botanical extracts and honey appear further down.
The page gives conflicting application details: its main instructions say three pumps on damp skin, while its FAQ says one to two on dry skin. Follow your bottle's directions and seek brand clarification if they differ. Current First Care VI listing.
This purchase makes most sense if you specifically enjoy a first serum. It isn't a replacement for sunscreen, and “first” doesn't mean every routine needs it. The 90 mL bottle costs less per mL, but asks you to commit more money before knowing whether you like it.
Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Water — $105 for 150 mL
Here, “water” means a leave-on toner. The list includes glycerin, butylene glycol, ginseng root water, alcohol denat., niacinamide and fragrance. Sulwhasoo directs a few drops pressed onto skin after First Care, morning and evening. Current Ginseng Water.
At $0.70 per mL, this is an expensive way to add a liquid layer. We'd put it behind replacing an unsatisfactory moisturizer. If you already use a toner you like, be specific about what this one would change before spending $105. Buying it alongside First Care also gives you two new products to evaluate at once.
The ginseng serum: check the retinol before adding it
Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Serum is $215 for 50 mL, or $4.30 per mL. Unlike First Care, it's positioned as a treatment serum after toner and before moisturizer. Its current formula contains glycerin, niacinamide, ginseng-derived ingredients, peptides, fragrance and retinol. No retinol percentage is disclosed on the page we checked.
The brand's main directions specify three pumps over face and neck, morning and night. Its FAQ also advises caution with other retinoids or strong exfoliants and adjusting frequency to tolerance. Current Rejuvenating Serum.
We wouldn't buy it as an unremarkable hydration layer or casually add it over an existing retinoid. The AAD recommends introducing retinoids slowly, using them at night and maintaining daytime sun protection; it advises against use during pregnancy. Discuss fit with a dermatologist if you're unsure. A brand's twice-daily routine isn't an instruction to rush a new retinol product into twice-daily use. AAD's retinoid guidance.
Cream versus Cream Rich: the difference goes beyond texture
Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream — $260 for 50 mL
The standard cream, pictured above, contains dimethicone, glycerin, squalane, ginseng-derived ingredients, peptides and a vitamin C derivative. Retinol is absent from its current US ingredient list. The summary says “squalene,” but the full list specifies squalane; we use the latter.
Sulwhasoo directs a pea-sized amount warmed between fingertips, then spread over face and neck after serum. This is the moisturizer step. Current standard Rejuvenating Cream.
At $5.20 per mL, we'd want to try the actual texture before committing. Ask whether a sample is available, and check the seller's return terms. If opening the jar would make you reluctant to use enough cream to cover your skin, the price is working against the purpose of the purchase.
Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Cream Rich — $260 for 50 mL
Rich is a separate formula, not simply the same cream with a different name. Its list includes squalane, meadowfoam seed oil, mango seed butter and avocado oil, plus retinol and fragrance. Sulwhasoo describes a dense texture; its directions also place a pea-sized amount after serum. Current Cream Rich.
That makes “I want a richer cream” only half the decision. You also need to want a retinol-containing product. Don't assume Rich is the easier option for reactive skin because it sounds more nourishing. There is no disclosed retinol percentage here either, so the two retinol products can't be ranked by strength from their names or ingredient positions.
Several current ginseng pages combine a “formulated without” heading with the confusing phrase “synthetic fragrance (less than 1%).” Their complete lists still declare fragrance/parfum. We haven't classified those products as fragrance-free or inferred an exact fragrance percentage from that wording.
If fragrance has caused a reaction before, start elsewhere. The AAD advises looking for fragrance-free products when fragrance is the problem; botanical ingredients and an “unscented” label don't settle that question. Trying a new product on a small area before broader use can help identify a reaction, but cannot guarantee future tolerance. Stop and wash off a product if a reaction develops. AAD's product-testing advice.
Treat the brand's study summaries as evidence with limits, too. For example, the standard cream page reports instrumental results from 31 women after six weeks of daily use. That is more specific than a vague promise of youthful skin, but it isn't a published comparison against the affordable cream already on your shelf. A percentage describing study participants isn't your personal chance of a result.
Where you can spend less
For a rinse-off gel, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is listed at $14 for 150 mL on its official store. That is about $0.09 per mL, compared with Sulwhasoo Foam's $0.19. COSRX includes tea tree oil and betaine salicylate, so it is an alternative formula to assess, not a fragrance-free or universally gentler substitute. Its directions start with wet hands and face, followed by gentle lathering and rinsing. Current COSRX cleanser.
For a lighter moisturizer, PURITO Oat In Calming Gel Cream is another candidate. The brand page displays $21 for 100 mL and directs US shoppers to its Amazon listing; confirm the selected US seller's price. Its formula includes 77% oat seed water, glycerin, squalane and panthenol, without listed fragrance/parfum. Apply after toner or serum. This is a lightweight gel option, not a like-for-like replacement for a dense cream or evidence of equivalent anti-aging results. PURITO's formula and shopping links.
Our broader Korean skincare shortlist offers other starting points by product job. You can compare those while still deciding that a particular Sulwhasoo product is the treat you want.
Make the decision at the whole-basket level
The listed Foam, 60 mL First Care, Ginseng Serum and standard Cream total $602. Add the Oil and Water and it becomes $747, before sunscreen, tax or shipping. Those totals explain why choosing individual roles matters more than finding a small discount on the complete routine.
When considering a set, write down which included products you would have bought separately. Count the rest as extras you may or may not use. A high advertised gift value doesn't reduce the amount leaving your account, and a subscription price only helps if repeat deliveries suit you.
For a first purchase, we'd rather have a clear answer to one practical question than a full shelf of unfamiliar products: did this make washing easier, give you a finish you prefer, or become something you look forward to using? If the answer is mainly the pleasure of the ritual, that's still an honest reason to keep it. You don't need to justify that enjoyment with a promise that expensive skincare must work better.
Yes, for gentle hydration: start with the $16.99 Dive-In serum, add Dive-In Cream for dry skin, Soothing Cream for combination or Balanceful Cica for oily.
