Sunscreen before or after moisturizer? Moisturizer first, SPF last
Updated October 22, 2026
Moisturizer goes on first and sunscreen goes on last. In the morning that means cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, then sunscreen as the final skincare step, with makeup on top. If your skin is oily, a moisturizing sunscreen can stand in for the cream; if it's dry, keep a moisturizer under a fluid SPF and let it set before the sunscreen goes on.
The reason is practical. Sunscreen works as an even film on the surface of your skin, and anything rubbed over it afterward thins that film. Moisturizer underneath gives it a smooth base instead.
This is a researched how-to built from current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these products; texture descriptions are the brands', and the advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
Do you put sunscreen on before or after moisturizer?
After. Beauty of Joseon tells you to layer moisturizer first if your skin needs it and to apply Relief Sun as the final morning skincare step, and SKIN1004, HYGGEE and Illiyoon also place their sunscreens last.
Here is the full morning order:
Cleanse, or rinse with water if you cleansed well the night before.
Apply toner, essence and serum, thinnest texture first.
Apply moisturizer. A pearl-sized amount covers most faces.
Wait until the moisturizer no longer feels wet.
Apply sunscreen, about a quarter teaspoon for the face, plus a little more for your neck.
Apply makeup once the sunscreen has set.
At night the routine stops at step 3, so moisturizer (or a sleeping pack) is your last layer. That's the key difference between a Korean skincare routine for day and night. Our Korean skincare routine guide covers the earlier steps.
How long should you wait after moisturizer to apply sunscreen?
Wait until the moisturizer stops feeling wet or slippery when you touch it lightly. For a thin gel that's often a minute or two; a rich cream can take several minutes. None of the brands in this guide publishes a minute count for the gap, so judge it by touch rather than a timer.
If you're short on time, use less moisturizer rather than skipping the wait; a thin layer settles faster. The sunscreens have timing notes too: HYGGEE says to apply 15 minutes before sun exposure, and Illiyoon asks you to let its mineral sun cream absorb before you get dressed so it doesn't discolor fabric.
Pairing a moisturizer with a fluid sunscreen
Most people end up here: a moisturizer matched to your skin type under a light sunscreen. The two fluids below share near-identical bases. Both are built on water, dibutyl adipate and propanediol (Beauty of Joseon slips rice extract in second), and both use the same four UV filters: diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, ethylhexyl triazone, methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol and diethylhexyl butamido triazone. Neither ingredient list includes fragrance.
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++, 50 ml is the creamier of the two. Its second ingredient is rice extract at 30%, and niacinamide sits high in the list. Beauty of Joseon describes a creamy, moisturizer-like texture with a dewy finish and no white cast, which makes it the natural partner for dry and normal skin. It's $12.99 for 50 ml at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026. The same formula is now sold as Rice + Niacinamide.
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF 50+ PA++++, 50 ml is the lighter one. SKIN1004 calls the texture serum-light and non-sticky, adds centella asiatica extract and three forms of hyaluronic acid in small amounts, and lists excess oil among the concerns it suits. At $9.69 for 50 ml, checked October 2026, it's the least expensive sunscreen here.
For the layer underneath, choose by how much moisture your skin wants:
Oily or combination skin:Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer, 50 ml opens with water, propanediol, glycerin, meadowfoam seed oil and betaine. Laneige describes a cool gel with tiny cream beads that melt on contact. The ingredient list includes fragrance and field mint (Mentha arvensis) leaf extract. $34.99.
Dry skin, no fragrance in the list:Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream, 80 ml pairs glycerin, squalane and light silicones with hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide MEA (a lab-made, ceramide-like lipid) and cholesterol in melting capsules. Aestura's direction is a pearl-sized amount, pressed in until the capsules soften. $27.99.
Dry skin on a budget:Illiyoon Ceramide Ato Concentrate Cream, 200 ml uses the same ceramide-like lipid (Illiyoon calls it Ceramide PC-104) plus ceramide NP, with dimethicone fourth in the list. Illiyoon says there's no added artificial fragrance, and the tube is meant for face and body. $20.00, or about 10 cents per ml.
Our take: SKIN1004 on top of the Laneige gel for oily skin, and Relief Sun on top of Aestura or Illiyoon for dry skin.
Can sunscreen replace moisturizer?
Yes, if your skin is oily or combination and the sunscreen itself is moisturizing; dry skin is usually better off keeping a cream underneath. Beauty of Joseon's directions draw the same line: moisturizer is recommended for dry, dehydrated or normal skin, combination skin can add it as needed, and oily skin may skip it.
HYGGEE Relief Sun Moisturizer SPF50+ PA++++, 50 ml is built for that one-step morning. Its list opens with water, dibutyl adipate, propanediol, denatured alcohol and cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) water, with glycerin, niacinamide and centella asiatica extract further down and ceramide NP near the end. HYGGEE describes a water-lotion texture that settles to a fresh, non-sticky finish and calls the formula fragrance-free. The alcohol is worth knowing about if it tends to sting your skin, and our product page notes that some reviewers find its moisturizer-like richness a little heavy on oilier skin. It's $13.99 for 50 ml at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Two things change when one product does both jobs. You need the full sunscreen amount, not a moisturizer-sized dab. And at night you still need a real moisturizer.
Does mineral sunscreen go on before or after moisturizer?
After, the same as any other sunscreen. You may have read that chemical sunscreens must go on bare skin to sink in while mineral ones sit on top, but current brand directions don't make that split. Beauty of Joseon and SKIN1004 (chemical filters) and Illiyoon (zinc oxide) all place sunscreen as the last skincare step.
Illiyoon Mineral Skin Barrier Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++, 50 ml uses zinc oxide as its only UV filter, listed second after water. Its base differs from the fluids above: cyclohexasiloxane, butyloctyl salicylate, propylheptyl caprylate and isododecane, which are light silicones and emollients, with panthenol, niacinamide and ceramide NP added. Illiyoon describes a natural finish with minimal white cast. It's $17.99 for 50 ml, checked October 2026.
Smooth it on in short strokes and pat rather than rubbing back and forth. Letting the moisturizer set first matters more here, because a wet layer underneath makes a zinc cream harder to spread evenly.
Why does my sunscreen pill over moisturizer?
Pilling, the small rolls of product that flake off as you spread, usually comes from too much product, too little waiting or too much rubbing. Most moisturizers and sunscreens are thickened with polymers; carbomer appears in five of the eight products in this guide. Rub a new layer over one that's still tacky, and those films can ball up together.
Common mistakes, and what to do instead:
Using too much moisturizer, or not waiting. A pearl-sized amount covers the face. If your skin still feels slick after the wait, use less next time.
Rubbing instead of pressing. Dot sunscreen across your face, spread it in short, light strokes, then press. Going over the same patch again and again is what lifts the layer underneath.
Keeping a pairing that doesn't work. Some combinations simply don't sit well together, and it's hard to predict from the label. Change one layer at a time: switch to a gel moisturizer, or, if your skin is oily, drop the moisturizer and use a moisturizing sunscreen.
Using less sunscreen to stop the pilling. Apply the full amount in two thinner passes instead, letting the first settle briefly.
Quick answers
Does sunscreen go before or after makeup?
Before. Sunscreen is the last skincare step, and makeup goes on top once it has set; HYGGEE's directions put its sunscreen right before makeup. Foundation with SPF is a bonus, not a replacement, because the SPF number assumes far more product than anyone wears as foundation.
How much sunscreen should you use on your face?
About a quarter teaspoon for the face. SPF ratings are measured at 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin, and a quarter teaspoon is roughly that amount for an adult face. Two finger-lengths of product is a common way to measure it.
How often should you reapply?
Beauty of Joseon says at least every 2 hours; HYGGEE says every 2 to 3 hours while you're in the sun. Over makeup, a sunscreen stick or an SPF cushion pressed on lightly is the practical way to top up.
Which Korean moisturizer works under SPF without pilling?
Any of the four above can, if you use a modest amount and let it set. The Laneige gel is the lightest base here; Aestura and Illiyoon are the richer creams without fragrance in the ingredient list.
What's a good Korean sunscreen for oily skin?
SKIN1004 describes the lightest texture of the four sunscreens here, calling its Water-Fit Sun Serum serum-light and non-sticky. It lists excess oil among its concerns and works over a gel moisturizer or alone.
