Skincare, simply explained
Heartleaf helps skin feel soft and comfortable. Learn about this plant ingredient used in Korean toners, serums and creams, what it does, and how to choose a formula for your routine.

Heartleaf extracts are used to help keep skin feeling soft and in good condition, giving them a straightforward role in everyday skincare.
Early research on a heartleaf leaf-extract toner found improvements in skin moisture. A hydrating toner can be a light extra step before cream.
Heartleaf contains compounds such as quercitrin, which researchers study for their ability to help manage oxidative stress in skin cells.
Heartleaf is a plant named for its heart-shaped leaves. Its botanical name is Houttuynia cordata, and you may also know it as dokudami. It grows in parts of Asia and is used in Korean skincare toners, serums and creams.
The plant contains a mixture of natural compounds, including flavonoids, which are studied for their antioxidant activity. In skincare, heartleaf extracts mainly help condition skin. That makes them a useful part of formulas designed to leave skin feeling soft and comfortable.
Heartleaf can be prepared in several ways. An extract draws out compounds from the plant or its leaves, while a leaf water is made through distillation. The ingredient name helps you tell them apart: Houttuynia Cordata Extract and Houttuynia Cordata Leaf Water describe two different preparations of the same plant.
On the ingredient list: Houttuynia Cordata Extract. Leaf extracts and waters have separate names.
Also known as: Heartleaf or dokudami.
Choose a heartleaf toner for a light layer, a serum for your treatment step, or a cream for moisture.
After cleansing, apply liquid products before moisturizer. Follow the label for pads, masks or rinse-off products.
Introduce it on its own, using the amount and frequency recommended for that formula.
Follow with a moisturizer if needed and sunscreen during the day.
Keep a heartleaf routine simple: hydration, a comfortable moisturizer and daily sunscreen are a good starting point.

An eight-week study measured hydration in people using a toner with heartleaf leaf extract. Moisture levels improved with regular use.
Scientists have studied heartleaf compounds in skin cells exposed to stress. Some reduced markers of oxidative stress, helping explain why heartleaf is being explored as an antioxidant ingredient.
Yes. Heartleaf is the common name; Houttuynia cordata is the botanical name you’ll see on ingredient lists. Words such as extract, leaf extract and leaf water describe different preparations.
If you prefer light layers, a heartleaf toner or gel moisturizer may be a comfortable choice. Choose by the finished texture and how your skin feels, rather than expecting heartleaf to switch off oil production.
It can be part of your everyday skincare, but it is not an established acne treatment. Keep a suitable acne treatment in your routine if you need one, and choose a heartleaf formula that feels comfortable alongside it.
Conditioning is an established cosmetic role for several heartleaf forms. Human evidence is still sparse; the main toner study is small, and antioxidant research largely comes from laboratory work.
The toner study had 16 participants and tested one leaf extract, with differences between the groups at the start. In June 2026, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel requested more safety data for six heartleaf ingredients. That request is neither a finding that they are unsafe nor a final safety endorsement.

An eight-week study with eight people in each group tested one 0.05% leaf-extract toner against its base. Its small size, starting differences and analysis limit certainty; it does not establish a general oil-control benefit.

Tested an extract fraction and isolated compounds in cultured cells under UVB stress. It did not test visible calming in people, and heartleaf is not a replacement for sunscreen.
Follow the finished product’s directions. Many toners and moisturizers are designed for daily use; exfoliating pads or formulas with other actives may need a different schedule.
They can fit in the same routine. You might use a heartleaf toner before a niacinamide serum, or choose a product containing both. Add new products gradually.
A number on the front does not tell the whole story. Extracts and waters are prepared differently, and the rest of the formula matters too. Choose the product for your skin and the step you need.
