Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum review: pick it over Glow Serum for dry, redness-prone skin
Updated October 22, 2026
Buy the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum: Green Tea + Panthenol, 30 ml if your skin feels tight, looks red after sun or wind, or gets uncomfortable with stronger serums: the renewed formula is green tea, mugwort and 5% panthenol, with no niacinamide, exfoliating acid or fragrance on its ingredient list. Pick the Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide, 30 ml instead if oil, visible pores and rough texture bother you most, because it adds 2% niacinamide and 0.5% BHA to a thick propolis base.
The two layer well together, and if you can't decide, the four-bottle Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit, 4 x 10 ml lets you compare Calming, Glow, Glow Deep and Revive before committing to a full size.
This is a researched comparison of current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these serums; texture descriptions are Beauty of Joseon's, and the buying advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
What does Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum do?
It's a moisturizing serum meant to make stressed, redness-prone skin look and feel calmer. Beauty of Joseon positions the Calming Serum for dryness, discomfort and visible redness after UV exposure or other everyday stressors, and rates its own intensity as "supportive" rather than strong.
The renewed formula is built on what the brand calls 50/30/5: 50.9% green tea leaf water, 30% mugwort and 5% panthenol. Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5, a humectant, which means it draws water into the top layers of skin and helps them hold on to it. Beauty of Joseon says this version adds the 30% mugwort and raises panthenol from 2% to 5% compared with the earlier formula.
The first ten ingredients on the current list are Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water (50.9%), Artemisia Capillaris Extract, Panthenol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Water, 1,2-Hexanediol, Methylpropanediol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer and Tromethamine. Here is what they do:
Camellia sinensis leaf water is green tea leaf water, used in place of most of the plain water.
Artemisia capillaris extract is the ingredient Beauty of Joseon calls mugwort. It belongs to the same Artemisia genus as common mugwort, and the brand credits it with reducing the look of redness.
Glycerin and butylene glycol are humectants that add slip and moisture.
1,2-hexanediol and methylpropanediol are glycols that support the preservative system and the feel of the formula.
The acrylates crosspolymer and tromethamine are a gelling agent and the ingredient that sets it. Together they give the serum its body; Beauty of Joseon calls the texture viscous yet lightweight, with a calm finish.
Further down the list you'll find Coptis japonica root extract, betaine, allantoin, dipotassium glycyrrhizate (a licorice-root salt used as a skin conditioner), malt, pomegranate, butterfly pea flower and mangosteen peel extracts, and sodium hyaluronate last.
What it doesn't contain matters as much. There is no exfoliating acid, no vitamin C, no retinoid and no brightening active, so it won't fade dark spots or clear pores. Think of it as the comfort layer in a routine, not the step that changes texture.
It comes in one size: 30 ml for $13.33 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026, or about $0.44 per ml.
Does Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum contain niacinamide?
No. Niacinamide isn't on the Calming Serum's current ingredient list, checked October 2026. That sets it apart from three of its siblings: the Glow Serum lists 2% niacinamide, and the Glow Deep and Revive serums include niacinamide too.
If niacinamide has bothered your skin before, Calming and the Light On Serum are the only two Beauty of Joseon serums named in this review whose ingredient lists don't include it. The Pore Firming Serum's full ingredient list isn't published on our product page, so we can't say either way for that one. If you want niacinamide for oil balance, the Glow Serum is the one that states a percentage on its label.
Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum vs Glow Serum: which should you buy?
Choose Calming for comfort and dryness on redness-prone skin; choose Glow for oil, visible pores and uneven texture. They cost almost the same, so the decision is about the formula, not the price.
The Glow Serum starts with Propolis Extract (60%), Dipropylene Glycol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Water, Niacinamide (2%), 1,2-Hexanediol, neem flower and leaf extracts, sodium hyaluronate and turmeric root extract. Further down it lists tea tree extract, centella, tamanu seed oil and betaine salicylate, the BHA the brand puts at 0.5%. Propolis is a resin that bees collect, so the Glow Serum isn't a fit if you avoid bee-derived ingredients.
The textures differ too. Beauty of Joseon describes the Glow Serum as thick and honey-like, cushiony on application, and absorbing without a sticky residue. The Calming Serum is the lighter of the two in the brand's descriptions.
Directions differ because of the BHA. The brand says the Glow Serum can be used morning or night, but asks you to wear sunscreen during the day because the formula contains BHA. The Calming Serum carries no such note.
Pick the Calming Serum if:
Your skin feels tight or stings easily and looks pink after sun, wind or a strong product.
You already use an exfoliating toner or pad and don't want another acid in the routine.
You want to avoid niacinamide or bee-derived ingredients.
Pick the Glow Serum if:
Shine through the day, visible pores and rough texture are the main complaints.
Your skin is comfortable with niacinamide and a mild BHA.
You like a cushiony, thicker serum feel.
Glow Serum is $12.99 for 30 ml at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026, about $0.43 per ml, against $13.33 for the Calming Serum. Our full Glow Serum review goes deeper on the propolis formula.
Is Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum good for sensitive skin?
Yes, on paper: Beauty of Joseon calls it scent-free and suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin, and says it suits dryness, irritation and visible redness in particular.
The ingredient list backs up the basics: it doesn't include fragrance, essential oils, drying alcohol (ethanol) or an exfoliating acid. Those are the usual suspects when a serum stings easily irritated skin.
Two caveats are worth knowing. First, it is 30% Artemisia capillaris extract plus several other plant extracts, and "botanical" doesn't mean "tolerated". If a mugwort product has bothered you before, this one has a lot of it. Second, no ingredient list can promise a reaction-free result for your face.
Introduce it on its own rather than alongside other new products. The American Academy of Dermatology's product-testing advice is to apply a new product to a quarter-sized spot, such as the inside of your arm, twice a day for seven to ten days before using it all over. Stop if it stings, itches or causes a rash, and see a dermatologist if a reaction is severe or keeps coming back. Our Korean skincare for sensitive skin guide covers building a short, low-risk routine.
Can you use the Calming Serum with the Glow Serum?
Yes. Beauty of Joseon sells both in the same discovery kit and says its serums can be layered. There are two simple ways to do it.
Same routine: apply the Calming Serum first because it's the lighter texture, let it absorb, then the Glow Serum, then moisturizer. Two to three drops of each is the amount the brand gives.
Split routine: use the Calming Serum in the morning under sunscreen and the Glow Serum in the evening. The Glow Serum is allowed during the day with sunscreen, but splitting them keeps each routine short.
If your routine already includes an exfoliating toner or pad, remember that the Glow Serum's 0.5% BHA is another exfoliant. On evenings your skin feels sensitized, keep the Calming Serum and skip the Glow.
One pairing to avoid: Beauty of Joseon asks you to keep AHA, BHA and PHA products in a separate routine from the Light On Serum, so don't stack Light On with the Glow Serum. The Calming Serum has no exfoliating acid and pairs with either.
For the Calming Serum itself, the brand's directions are to apply two to three drops to your face and neck after cleansing and toning, spread or massage it in, pat to help it absorb, and follow with moisturizer. In the morning, sunscreen goes last. If you want a Beauty of Joseon finish, the light Red Bean Water Gel, 100 ml ($12.99) or the richer Dynasty Cream, 50 ml ($17.99) work as the moisturizer, and Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics, 50 ml ($12.99, SPF50+ PA++++) as the sunscreen, all checked October 2026.
Light On, Revive or the discovery kit: where the Calming Serum fits
The Calming Serum is one of several 30 ml Beauty of Joseon serums we carry. These are the closest alternatives, and each has a separate job:
Light On Serum: Centella + Vita C, 30 ml lists 68% centella asiatica extract and 10% 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, a vitamin C derivative, for dullness and uneven-looking texture. It's for morning and evening use and costs $10.99.
Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin, 30 ml pairs ginseng root water with snail secretion filtrate, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. The brand calls it fragrance-free and alcohol-free and aims it at dry, tired-feeling skin that has lost some bounce. It's $12.99.
Pore Firming Serum: Red Bean PDRN + Peptide, 30 ml is aimed at visible pores and a plumper, firmer look. Beauty of Joseon builds it on Red Bean PDRN, which it describes as purified red bean DNA fragments, plus a peptide, and calls the texture silky and lightweight for morning or evening use. Our product page doesn't publish its full ingredient list. It's $10.99.
We've left out the Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal, 30 ml ($12.99), because the brand designs it mainly for the eye area and it contains retinal, a vitamin A derivative.
The Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit, 4 x 10 ml holds minis of Calming, Glow, Glow Deep and Revive (Light On isn't included) for $20.99, checked October 2026. That's about $0.52 per ml, more than the roughly $0.43 to $0.44 per ml of a full size, but less than buying two full bottles to compare ($26.32 for Calming plus Glow). Our take: it's the sensible first purchase if you're torn between Calming and Glow and curious about the other two.
One detail to check: the kit page lists the Calming mini as green tea leaf water 76% with panthenol 2% and calls it watery. The 2% panthenol figure matches the earlier formula the full-size page says was replaced, since that page says the renewed version raised panthenol from 2% to 5% and added 30% mugwort. The renewed full size is 50.9% green tea, 30% mugwort and 5% panthenol, and the brand calls its texture viscous. If you specifically want the 5% panthenol version, read the panel on the box you receive.
Quick answers
How do you use Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum?
After cleansing and toning, apply two to three drops to your face and neck, spread or massage it in, pat until absorbed, and follow with moisturizer. Finish with sunscreen in the morning.
Can you use it morning and night?
Yes. Beauty of Joseon's kit directions list the Calming Serum for morning or evening, and the formula has no exfoliating acid or retinoid that would limit it to one time of day.
Is Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum fragrance-free?
The brand calls it scent-free, and the current ingredient list doesn't include fragrance or essential oils. The whole discovery kit is also described as fragrance-free.
Does it help with redness?
Beauty of Joseon says the mugwort helps reduce the look of redness and the green tea calms skin stressed by UV and other external factors. That's a cosmetic claim about appearance; the brand doesn't publish a clinical result for the renewed formula on our product page.
Can you use the Calming Serum with vitamin C?
Yes. It contains no exfoliating acid, so it pairs with the Light On Serum or another vitamin C serum. Apply the thinner serum first: Beauty of Joseon calls Light On lightweight and fast-absorbing and the Calming Serum viscous, so Light On goes on first, then the Calming Serum, then moisturizer.
How to use azelaic acid: apply after toner on dry skin, start once or twice a week and finish with SPF. Compare Anua, Medicube and Centellian24 10% serums.
