Korean tinted sunscreens: compare protection labels and shades
Updated September 8, 2026
A tinted sunscreen can look promising on your hand, then turn peachy, pale or oddly pink across your whole face. The best Korean tinted sunscreen for you needs to work at the amount you actually need for sun protection. A lovely color in a tiny swatch only answers half the question.
For a tint chosen to match your skin, Beauty of Joseon's current US Tinted Mineral Dayscreen SPF 30 is the clearer starting point here, with 15 shades. d'Alba's US Waterfull+ Tone-Up Pink Correcting SPF 50+ serves a different purpose: a pink brightening effect. That isn't a substitute for a range of skin-tone shades.
These are researched options based on current brand information and US labels, not a wear-tested ranking. Below, we'll separate shade choice, UV protection and finish so you can decide which kind of tint is worth trying.
First, decide what you want the color to do
A skin-matching tint aims to blend into your complexion while adding some coverage. A tone-up formula deliberately changes its appearance, often with a pale pink or peach cast. You might enjoy that effect, but “brightening” on the label doesn't tell you how it will look on your face.
If you're hoping to soften the look of uneven tone without wearing a separate base, start with a shade range that includes your depth and undertone. If you specifically want a pink finish, look at tone-up formulas with that expectation. Neither description promises a match for everyone.
Tint can also have a purpose beyond coverage. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides can help protect against sunlight's visible light, which can contribute to dark spots, particularly in darker skin tones. That doesn't establish equal visible-light protection for every tinted formula. This comparison doesn't assign either product a measured rating for it. AAD's sunscreen label guide.
Beauty of Joseon: more room to find a skin-tone match
Current US product: Tinted Mineral Dayscreen SPF 30, 40 mL.
Beauty of Joseon lists broad-spectrum SPF 30 and 15 shades for this version. The brand describes light-to-medium, buildable coverage. It is the option to investigate first if your main frustration is finding enough shade choice in a Korean tinted sunscreen. Current Beauty of Joseon US product.
The current US Sephora at Kohl's listing identifies zinc oxide 17% as the sunscreen active. Its ingredient list also includes iron oxides and ceramide NP. Titanium dioxide appears among the inactive ingredients; its presence there doesn't make it an additional listed sunscreen active. This is why the Drug Facts panel is more useful for identifying filters than scanning every ingredient name. US retail label and ingredients.
The shade names give you two things to work with. For example, 15C is Fair Cool, 17N is Fair Neutral and 21W is Fair Warm; the range also includes 59N, Very Deep Neutral. Those are useful starting labels, not proof that any particular shade will disappear on your skin. The same retailer lists all 15 options, but that doesn't mean every color is in stock whenever you shop.
The practical limit: the brand directs you to use a water-resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating. Keep this comparison focused on a tinted daily base, rather than assuming it can handle a pool day. Its marketing also describes long-lasting base coverage. That is a makeup claim, not permission to leave sunscreen unreapplied for those hours; the directions still say to reapply at least every two hours. Beauty of Joseon's directions.
Check the name on the bottle carefully. Older roundups describe Daily Tinted Fluid SPF 40 and a 12-shade range. Those details shouldn't be carried over to this current SPF 30 Dayscreen.
d'Alba: a pink tone-up effect, with a different filter mix
d'Alba's official page describes a soft pink tint. Think of it as a color effect you need to assess, rather than a flexible neutral shade. If pink bases tend to look pale or separate from your neck, a “tone-up” promise doesn't solve that mismatch. d'Alba's product information.
The manufacturer's US label images, available through the National Library of Medicine's DailyMed database, list four sunscreen actives:
Homosalate 7%.
Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, also called octinoxate, 7%.
Titanium dioxide 5.9%.
Ethylhexyl salicylate, also called octisalate, 4.5%.
That makes this a hybrid sunscreen, with both mineral and chemical filters. The pictured US tube says broad-spectrum SPF 50+; it isn't described here using a PA rating from another market. The inspected label doesn't provide a verified 40- or 80-minute water-resistance rating, so it doesn't earn a swimming or sports recommendation from this research. d'Alba US label record and package images.
The official ingredient list includes glycerin, panthenol and ceramide NP, along with orange oil, mandarin peel oil and Litsea cubeba fruit oil. Readers who avoid fragrant botanical oils will want to check that list closely. Ingredient presence alone doesn't tell us how soothing, greasy or comfortable the finished formula will feel on someone else's skin. d'Alba's full ingredient information.
This is worth considering when you want its particular pink finish. It offers less shade flexibility than the Beauty of Joseon range, and we haven't verified that it suits every complexion or layers neatly with every moisturizer.
A shade check that answers more than “too light or too dark?”
Beauty of Joseon's shade guide separates depth from undertone. Depth describes where a complexion falls from fair to deep; undertone describes the warmer, cooler, neutral or olive color beneath it. A shade can have the right depth and still look too pink or orange. Beauty of Joseon's shade guidance.
Use those two questions separately when narrowing your options. Here's a practical way to compare a tint you can sample or try:
Check depth at the jaw and neck. Look in daylight. If the applied area looks much lighter or darker, adjust depth before debating subtle undertones.
Then look at the color difference. A noticeable pink, peach or orange edge may point to undertone, even when the shade isn't especially light or dark. Moving one shade deeper may preserve the same mismatch.
Judge the sunscreen amount, too. After a preliminary swatch, assess a generous, even application according to the product directions. A sheer trace can hide a color problem that becomes obvious when you apply more.
Check it with your usual morning products. Note whether the finish still looks acceptable over your moisturizer and after another application later. This is a proposed home comparison, not a report that either formula passed it.
If you're ordering online, a swatch shown on a complexion close to yours is more useful than the color of the tube. Screen settings and lighting still affect what you see. Check the seller's actual return policy before relying on being able to exchange an opened shade.
For deeper or olive complexions, look for evidence of a suitable shade rather than trusting “universal.” A pink tone-up finish may be exactly the cosmetic effect one person wants and an obvious mismatch for another. The editorial image above isn't a product swatch or shade reference.
Read the protection label separately from the shade name
For everyday shopping, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Mineral sunscreens list zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both as their active filters. Hybrid formulas combine mineral and chemical filters. Those categories describe the sunscreen actives; they don't tell you which tint will match or how much cosmetic coverage it offers. AAD's label guide.
“Water-resistant” has a specific meaning on a US label: protection is tested for 40 or 80 minutes in water. It doesn't mean waterproof. For swimming, heavy sweating or a beach afternoon, a verified rating matters more than whether a tint can replace your base makeup. The two options above have limitations for that job. FDA sunscreen guidance.
Also check the exact market version. US sunscreen rules aren't frozen in time: the FDA added bemotrizinol as a permitted sunscreen active in June 2026. An older article saying that nothing has changed may be out of date. That change doesn't tell you which filters are in the bottle you're buying; its current label does. FDA's current sunscreen information.
If neither tint works, our Korean sunscreen guide compares other formula choices. You can keep sun protection and cosmetic coverage as separate purchases.
Make room for the second application
Apply sunscreen generously and evenly before going outdoors, covering exposed skin including the ears and neck. The AAD advises applying it 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours outdoors, or immediately after swimming or sweating. Follow the exact product label as well. A tint dabbed only over redness leaves the rest of the face out of that application. AAD's application guidance.
A tinted sunscreen has to fit more than your first look in the bathroom mirror. Before committing to it as your everyday base, consider where you'll be when it's time to reapply and whether you still like the color at that point. The useful purchase is one whose shade works through that ordinary day, without needing to skimp on sunscreen to make it look right.
Use at least a quarter teaspoon of sunscreen on your face; the AAD advises a teaspoon, about two finger-lengths. Plus gels, sticks and 50 ml tube life.
