How to exfoliate your face: peeling gel, acid liquid or pad?
Updated October 22, 2026
To exfoliate your face, pick one method and use it after cleansing: a rinse-off peeling gel massaged onto dry skin once or twice a week, a leave-on acid liquid or toner applied before serum, or a pre-soaked pad that does the same job with built-in wiping. Most people need only one: a gel for a weekly step at the sink, an acid liquid for steady pore and texture care, or a pad for the fastest routine.
This is a researched guide built from current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these products; texture descriptions are the brands', and the advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
How do you exfoliate your face properly?
Gently, on clean skin, with one product, inside that product's own frequency limit. The steps are the same for every format:
Cleanse first. Remove sunscreen and makeup so the exfoliant reaches skin, not residue. Long-wear SPF or makeup calls for a .
Dry your face. Both peeling gels go on dry skin, as do COSRX AHA 7 and the Haruharu serum.
Apply one exfoliant, as directed. Massage and rinse a gel; sweep or pat on a liquid; wipe a pad from the center outward, then flip it.
Keep the pressure light. The American Academy of Dermatology advises a gentle touch and lukewarm water (AAD exfoliation guidance).
Moisturize, then wear sunscreen every morning, especially with an AHA such as glycolic or lactic acid.
Start low. Begin at the bottom of the brand's range; go up only if skin stays comfortable.
If you use a prescription retinoid or benzoyl peroxide, the AAD notes skin can be more sensitive, so ask your clinician before adding exfoliation. Skip any exfoliant over sunburn, broken skin or a fresh shave.
Should you exfoliate before or after cleansing?
After. Every product in this guide is directed for use after cleansing, and none is a face wash; our SKIN1004 product FAQ calls the gel a rinse-off exfoliator, not a foaming face wash.
The order is cleanse, exfoliate, toner (if your exfoliant isn't one), serum, moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen. A rinse-off gel comes off before anything else goes on. A leave-on liquid or pad stays on and takes the toner slot, before serum.
Is a peeling gel better than a scrub?
For most faces, a Korean peeling gel is the gentler choice, because there are no hard grains. Western-style scrubs rely on grains such as seeds, shells or jojoba beads. A peeling gel, or gommage, contains cellulose that gathers into soft rolls as you massage it over dry skin, carrying loose flakes away when you rinse.
Our Beauty of Joseon product page notes the rolls are mostly the gel's own cellulose, not a gauge of dead skin, so don't scrub harder to make more.
Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel, 100ml is purely physical, with no exfoliating acids. The list opens with water, Prunus mume flower water (19%, which the brand calls plum blossom water), cellulose (8%), methylpropanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, carbomer, arginine, ethylhexylglycerin and allantoin, followed by green tea, heartleaf and fruit extracts; it shows no added fragrance or essential oils. Directions: after cleansing, on completely dry skin, massage a dime-sized amount for about 20 seconds away from the eyes, then rinse with lukewarm water, once or twice a week. It's $9.09 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tea-Trica Mild Peeling Gel, 125ml adds a mild chemical side. SKIN1004's full ingredient list opens with water and tea tree leaf water, puts cellulose fifth and places its acids near the end: salicylic acid and capryloyl salicylic acid (BHAs), gluconolactone (a PHA) and succinic acid. It also includes isopropyl alcohol, tenth of 34 ingredients, and tea tree leaf oil, an essential oil, worth knowing if either bothers you. Directions: with dry face and hands after cleansing, spread it away from the eyes and lips, massage gently and rinse with lukewarm water, one to three times a week. It's $9.19 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Our take: choose Beauty of Joseon for a step with nothing acidic in it, and SKIN1004 for cellulose plus low-listed BHA and PHA. Either one is that night's exfoliation; don't follow it with an acid liquid or pad.
Leave-on acid liquids: AHA, BHA or PHA
A leave-on liquid is a chemical exfoliant: acids loosen dead surface cells instead of rubbing them off. AHAs (glycolic, lactic) work at the surface and suit rough, dull texture. Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble, the usual pick for blackheads and oily zones; betaine salicylate is a gentler relative. PHAs (gluconolactone) are larger molecules that brands present as the mildest.
Apply after cleansing, on clean skin (dry, for AHA 7 and the Haruharu serum): sweep or pat on a thin layer, let it settle, don't rinse, then serum and moisturizer.
COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner, 150ml is the beginner option. Its 11 ingredients start with water, willow bark water, apple fruit water, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium lactate, glycolic acid and betaine salicylate; our product page reports the two acids at 0.1% each, from current packaging imagery. COSRX positions it for daily use, morning or evening, sprayed onto a cotton pad or misted on and patted in, and rules out pairing it in the same routine with another AHA or BHA, retinol or vitamin C. It's $12.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Haruharu Wonder Centella 3% PHA Gentle Liquid Exfoliating Serum, 120ml sits in the middle, with a stated ceiling. The list opens with orange fruit water, gluconolactone (3%), centella extract and its compounds, ectoin, sodium hyaluronate and a kombucha black tea ferment. Apply to clean, dry skin, over the face or only the T-zone, no more than three times a week; for blackheads, Haruharu suggests two or three times weekly, then one or two for maintenance. It's $17.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid, 100ml is the strongest here, labeled for experienced acid users. Its 10 ingredients pair 7% glycolic acid with 78.05% apple fruit water and 2% niacinamide, plus panthenol and sodium hyaluronate. Start once a week: dampen a cotton pad, swipe a thin layer over dry skin, leave it on, and build toward two or three times a week only if comfortable. It's $10.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Exfoliating pads: Zero Pore Pad 2.0 or Mild
A pad is an acid toner that comes pre-soaked, with a textured side that adds light physical contact. Korean exfoliating pads are the quickest format, but you're wiping, so press lightly.
Medicube directs both versions the same way: after cleansing, sweep the embossed side from the center of the face outward, avoiding the eyes, then flip and sweep once with the smoother side. Pat in the leftover liquid, leave it on, and continue with serum and moisturizer.
Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0, 70 pads uses lactic acid, salicylic acid and betaine salicylate, with panthenol and sodium hyaluronate. Medicube permits daily use, morning or evening, and suggests very sensitive skin start a few times a week. The ingredient list includes alcohol denat. near the top, citrus peel, rosemary, eucalyptus and lavender oils, and limonene. It's $19.99 for 70 pads at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Medicube Zero Pore Pad Mild, 70 pads swaps in gluconolactone, with panthenol, madecassoside, centella and several forms of hyaluronic acid. Medicube calls it fragrance-free and made with sensitive skin in mind; the list has no alcohol denat. or essential oils, though it includes rose flower water. You can also leave a pad on one area for 5 to 10 minutes. It's $20.99 for 70 pads at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Our take: Mild is the better first pad for most people, especially easily irritated skin. Choose 2.0 if you're comfortable with acids, oil and blackheads are your main concern, and its alcohol and essential oils don't bother you.
What should you put on your face after exfoliating?
A plain, comfortable moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. One simple option is Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream, 50ml ($21.99), with niacinamide, ceramide NP and beta-glucan and, per our product page, no added oils or essential oils. For mornings, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics, 50ml is labeled SPF50+ PA++++ ($12.99). Prices checked October 2026.
The FDA advises sunscreen while using an AHA product and for a week after you stop (FDA on alpha hydroxy acids), even if you exfoliate only at night.
What not to stack on the same night:
Two exfoliants. A peeling gel plus a pad, or an acid liquid plus a pad, doubles the job.
Retinol or a retinoid. Both COSRX liquids rule this out in the same routine.
Vitamin C with an acid. Move vitamin C to the morning of a non-exfoliating day.
An exfoliating cleanser. An AHA or BHA face wash counts toward your total.
The common mistakes are starting a 7% glycolic liquid at three nights a week and pushing through stinging. Burning, a rash or swelling means rinse it off and stop.
Quick answers
Should you use a chemical or physical exfoliant on your face?
Use whichever you'll do gently and consistently; most people don't need both. A cellulose peeling gel suits a weekly rinse-off step, while a low-strength acid liquid or pad suits regular pore and texture care, especially for blackheads, since BHA works in oil.
Do you exfoliate in the morning or at night?
Night is the simplest default, especially for COSRX AHA 7, whose directions say night or a carefully sun-protected morning. The COSRX AHA/BHA toner and both Medicube pads are directed for morning or evening. Either way, wear sunscreen during the day.
How often should you exfoliate your face?
Follow each product's own range, from once or twice a week for the Beauty of Joseon gel to daily for the COSRX AHA/BHA toner and Medicube pads, and start at the low end. Our schedule by product type goes further.
How often to exfoliate depends on the product: peeling gels 1-2 times a week, mild acid toners and BHA pads up to daily, plus signs you're overdoing it.
How to use azelaic acid: apply after toner on dry skin, start once or twice a week and finish with SPF. Compare Anua, Medicube and Centellian24 10% serums.
