How often should you exfoliate your face? Gels 1–2 times a week, mild acids up to daily
Updated October 22, 2026
Follow the limit printed on each product rather than one number for your whole face: rinse-off peeling gels such as COSRX's are labeled for one to two uses a week, while mild acid toners such as COSRX's AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner, and some BHA pads, are positioned for daily use. Then count every exfoliating step toward one weekly total, use one exfoliant per session, and keep the total where your skin stays comfortable.
This is a researched guide built from current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these products; texture descriptions are the brands', and the schedules come from comparing each product's printed directions, formulas, sizes and prices.
How often should you exfoliate your face?
As often as the label on your strongest exfoliant allows, and often less. A gel you rinse off and a pad you leave on carry different limits. The six products here, checked October 2026:
List everything that exfoliates. Include pads, "clarifying" toners, peeling gels, acid serums and acid cleansers.
Note each product's label limit. If none is printed, write that down rather than borrowing a number from another bottle.
Use one exfoliant per session. COSRX's toner directions rule out using it in the same routine as another AHA or BHA exfoliant, retinol or vitamin C.
Start with one or two sessions a week. Hold that for two weeks, then add one session at a time while your skin stays comfortable.
Count the week, not the day. Two pad mornings plus one peeling gel night is three sessions.
Plan for daytime. The COSRX toner and One Step pad both direct daytime sunscreen; the toner specifies broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
If you use a prescription retinoid or other prescribed skin product, check with your clinician before adding any of these.
How often should you use a peeling gel?
Once or twice a week is the published limit for the COSRX gel, and a sensible ceiling for rinse-off peeling gels generally. As you massage, the cellulose in the formula rolls into small crumbs (a gommage-style peel) that carry loosened flakes away. That rubbing is physical contact, so a gentle gel still isn't an everyday step. Don't massage longer to get more crumbs; the product description says the gel itself forms the gommage.
COSRX Low pH Good Night Soft Peeling Gel is $10.99 for 120 mL at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026. Apply after cleansing while your face is still damp, massage gently away from the eyes, rinse with lukewarm water, and use one to two times per week. The list opens with water, cellulose (8%, per the brand), glycerin, rose flower water, propanediol and butylene glycol; further down are lavender flower water, niacinamide, lactobionic acid (a PHA, or polyhydroxy acid, a milder acid family) and papain, an enzyme from papaya. COSRX doesn't publish a pH value despite the name.
ma:nyo Galactomy Enzyme Peeling Gel is $9.89 for 75 mL, checked October 2026. It goes on a dry face after cleansing, avoiding the eye and lip areas, with a rolling massage and a rinse. The list opens with water, dipropylene glycol, cellulose, propylene glycol, quaternium-60, carbomer (a gel thickener) and 1,2-hexanediol, with Galactomyces ferment filtrate eighth and hyaluronic acid forms, papain, allantoin and gluconolactone (another PHA) after. It also includes orange peel, patchouli and ylang-ylang oils plus limonene. ma:nyo doesn't publish a weekly frequency on the page we checked, so our take is to hold it to the COSRX gel's once-or-twice-a-week ceiling.
How often should you use a BHA or AHA toner?
Daily only for toners labeled for it, and even then a few times a week is the better start. AHAs (such as glycolic acid) loosen the surface layer; BHAs (salicylic acid and relatives such as betaine salicylate) are usually chosen for pores and oil. A printed percentage tells you more about strength than either name.
COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner
$12.99 for 150 mL, checked October 2026. COSRX positions it for daily use by acid beginners and all skin types. The 11 ingredients are water, willow bark water, apple fruit water, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium lactate, glycolic acid, betaine salicylate, allantoin, panthenol and ethyl hexanediol, and the current product imagery shows each acid at 0.1%. Spray onto a cotton pad and sweep, or mist and pat in. COSRX says to avoid it during pregnancy or breastfeeding and to reduce frequency if irritation persists. Our COSRX AHA/BHA toner review has more.
Some By Mi AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner
$18.99 for 150 mL, checked October 2026. Soak a cotton pad, wipe along the skin's texture, then pat in the rest; for a targeted area, leave a soaked pad on for one to three minutes. No frequency is published. The list opens with water, butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, glycerin, niacinamide (2%, per the brand), tea tree leaf water, polyglyceryl-4 caprate (an emulsifier) and papaya fruit extract. Salicylic acid is listed at 10 ppm and lactobionic acid at 100 ppm (0.001% and 0.01%), and the list we read names no separate glycolic or lactic acid. It also includes peppermint oil. We'd start it every other evening, keep the soak for occasional rough patches, and never pair it with a pad in the same session.
BHA toner pads
Pads add a wipe to the acid, so each pad counts as an exfoliating session.
COSRX directs daily use for the One Step Original Clear Pad, $15.99 for 70 pads, checked October 2026 and out of stock at Sleepy Hello when we checked. The essence opens with willow bark water, butylene glycol, glycerin and betaine salicylate (1%, per COSRX), with panthenol, allantoin, and orange peel and tea tree leaf oils further down. Sweep the embossed side first, flip to the soft side, and leave the essence on.
The Neogen Dermalogy Poreraser Clear BHA Pad is $15.99 for 90 pads (160 mL), checked October 2026, about 18 cents a pad against about 23 cents for the COSRX jar. Neogen lists 0.9% betaine salicylate plus AHA, PHA and LHA (lipohydroxy acid, a salicylic acid derivative) on microfiber pads, with green tea, persimmon, grape and Japanese pepper leaf extracts. Wipe the face and neck after cleansing, avoiding the eyes, and pat in the leftover essence. Neogen doesn't publish a frequency or full ingredient list on the page we checked; with four acid types and a textured pad, we'd start on two or three evenings a week.
Oily skin can usually work up to a product's label limit, while dry skin does better near the bottom of it.
Oily skin: a daily-labeled BHA pad or the COSRX toner can become a daily step if your skin is still comfortable after two or three weeks of building up. On peeling gel nights, the gel replaces the pad.
Combination skin: exfoliate where the oil is. Use a pad or acid toner on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) two to four days a week and leave drier cheeks out.
Dry skin: one or two sessions a week is plenty. The COSRX gel on damp skin, followed by your usual moisturizer, keeps it short.
Easily irritated skin: one session a week of your gentlest product, skipped entirely during a spell of redness or stinging. Our guide to Korean skincare for sensitive skin covers the rest of the routine.
What are the signs of over-exfoliating?
Stinging when you apply a plain moisturizer is the clearest early sign; tightness, flaking and lingering redness are the others.
Products that never stung before start to sting or burn.
Skin feels tight within minutes of cleansing.
Flaking appears where you weren't dry before, often around the nose and mouth.
Skin looks shiny and glassy while feeling tight.
Redness or new breakouts don't settle within a day or two.
If you notice these, stop every exfoliant for one to two weeks, keep to a gentle cleanser, plain moisturizer and sunscreen, then restart with one session a week of a single product. If a reaction is severe or doesn't settle, get medical advice.
Quick answers
Can you exfoliate your face every day?
Only with a product labeled for daily use, such as the COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner or One Step Original Clear Pad, and only after building up to it. Most routines don't need daily exfoliation at all.
Can you use a peeling gel and a BHA pad in the same week?
Yes, on different days, counting both toward your weekly total. For oily skin, that could be pads on three evenings and the gel on one other.
Does a toner pad count as exfoliating?
An acid-soaked pad does; both pads here contain betaine salicylate. A hydrating pad without acids is a different step, and our Korean toner pad guide separates the two.
Where can you buy these in the US?
All six are listed at Sleepy Hello, prices checked October 2026:
How to use azelaic acid: apply after toner on dry skin, start once or twice a week and finish with SPF. Compare Anua, Medicube and Centellian24 10% serums.
