COSRX Snail 92 Cream vs Snail 96 Essence: you only need one, and here's which
Updated October 22, 2026
You don't need both. If you only want one COSRX snail product, choose the Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence when you already have a moisturizer you like, and the Snail 92 All in One Cream when you want snail mucin and your moisturizer in a single step.
They do layer well if you want both: essence first, cream on top. Oily skin is usually better served by the essence alone, or with a thin layer of cream, while drier skin gets more from the cream, because it adds the oil and emulsifiers the essence doesn't have.
This is a researched comparison of current COSRX and Sleepy Hello product information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested either product; texture descriptions come from COSRX and our product pages, and the buying advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
What is the difference between COSRX Snail 92 and Snail 96?
The 96 is an essence, a watery layer that goes on before moisturizer, and the 92 is a moisturizer, a gel-cream that finishes your skincare. Both are built on snail secretion filtrate, the processed snail mucin COSRX uses as the base of each formula, so the real difference is everything around it.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, 100 ml has 12 ingredients. After snail secretion filtrate come betaine, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium polyacrylate, phenoxyethanol, sodium hyaluronate, allantoin, ethyl hexanediol, carbomer, panthenol and arginine. Betaine, butylene glycol and sodium hyaluronate are humectants, ingredients that draw water into the top layer of skin. Carbomer and sodium polyacrylate thicken the liquid, and panthenol and allantoin are skin-conditioning ingredients. There is no oil, butter or emulsifier in the list.
COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream, 100 ml has 18. Snail secretion filtrate and betaine lead, then caprylic/capric triglyceride, cetearyl olivate, sorbitan olivate, sodium hyaluronate, cetearyl alcohol, stearic acid, arginine and dimethicone, followed by carbomer, panthenol, allantoin, sodium polyacrylate, xanthan gum, ethyl hexanediol, adenosine and phenoxyethanol.
The new names are what make it a cream. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is a light emollient oil. Cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate are olive-derived emulsifiers that hold oil and water together, cetearyl alcohol and stearic acid are fatty thickeners, and dimethicone is a silicone that leaves a smooth, thin film. Our product page puts the sodium hyaluronate at 1,000 ppm (0.1%), and the list adds adenosine, which our product page lists for wrinkle care.
Neither ingredient list includes fragrance or essential oils. The cream's cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol used for texture, not the drying kind of alcohol.
Our product page describes the essence as clear and a little stretchy, almost stringy as you pat it in, settling to a soft, cushioned finish. It describes the cream as a lightweight, non-sticky jelly that absorbs quickly and leaves a dewy finish; COSRX's US product page says it hydrates "without heaviness".
Do the numbers 92 and 96 mean one is stronger?
No. Each number is the share of the formula that is snail secretion filtrate: 96.3% in the essence and 92% in the cream. It tells you how much of the bottle the filtrate takes up, not how potent the filtrate is.
An essence can run higher because it has little else to carry. The filtrate replaces water as the base, and only a few humectants and thickeners are added. A cream needs room for oil, emulsifiers and fatty thickeners, so the snail share drops a few points. Those extra ingredients are the reason to buy a cream, not a dilution of the essence.
COSRX doesn't publish how concentrated the filtrate itself is, and it doesn't publish a side-by-side test of the two. So the four-point gap on the label isn't a reason to choose the essence over the cream, or to expect that using both doubles anything. Choose by routine step and texture instead.
Can you use COSRX Snail 96 essence and Snail 92 cream together?
Yes. They are different steps: the essence directions end with a moisturizer, and the cream directions place it after cleansing and toning, with sunscreen next in the morning.
A simple order that matches both sets of directions:
Cleanse, then use your toner if you have one.
Apply two to three pumps of the 96 essence across the face (four to five if you include the neck and chest) and pat it in.
Spread a small amount of the 92 cream evenly over the face, avoiding the eye and mouth areas, and pat gently to help it absorb.
In the morning, finish with sunscreen, then makeup.
The essence directions say it can be used once or twice a day. Layering the two doesn't give you more of an active; it gives you a water-light layer and an emollient layer. That pairing makes sense for skin that feels tight by midday, in dry weather or under indoor heating. If your face feels coated after both, drop one; the cream on its own still delivers snail filtrate.
Is COSRX Snail 92 cream enough as a moisturizer on its own?
For normal, combination and mildly dry skin, it often is. It's a complete moisturizer, with humectants to attract water and emollients plus dimethicone to slow water loss, and COSRX's US page says it is designed for all skin types, especially sensitive or dry skin.
It is still a light cream. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is the only oil in the list, and there are no butters or ceramides. Very dry skin, or skin that feels tight again within a few hours, may want the essence underneath or a richer moisturizer at night. Our Korean moisturizers for dry skin guide covers heavier options.
If you are choosing between the two because you only want one product, the cream is the one that can stand alone. The essence has nothing in its list to seal water in (no oils, emollients or silicones), so for most people it works under a moisturizer rather than instead of one.
Which COSRX snail product is better for oily skin?
The 96 essence. With no oils or emulsifiers in its ingredient list, it gives you hydration without the cream's emollient layer, and for many oily faces the essence plus sunscreen is enough in the morning.
The cream isn't off-limits for oily skin. Our product page describes it as a non-sticky jelly, and a thin layer at night may be all you need. Oily skin that is also dehydrated, shiny but tight, tends to suit the essence first and a small amount of cream only where it feels dry.
If you break out easily, add one product at a time so you can tell which one made a difference. COSRX doesn't publish non-comedogenic testing for either product on the pages we checked. Our Korean moisturizers for oily skin guide has more gel options.
Size, price and which one to buy
Both come in 100 ml at Sleepy Hello. The 96 essence was $9.62 for 100 ml, about $0.10 per ml, and the 92 cream was $26.00 for 100 ml, or $0.26 per ml, checked October 2026. Buying both came to $35.62. COSRX's US site sells the cream by weight, 100 g (3.52 oz) for $26 in a jar or tube, plus a 50 g tube for $15. Prices change often, so check the product page before you order.
Both pages showed out of stock when we checked, with a notify-me option. If you want a snail essence now, the COSRX Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence, 80 ml was in stock at $18.99, checked October 2026. It is a different product: a two-chamber essence pairing a 74.3% Triple Snail Complex with 5% niacinamide and glutathione, aimed at brighter-looking tone rather than the 96's single-ingredient simplicity.
Pick the 96 essence if:
you already have a moisturizer you like and want hydration underneath it
your skin is oily or combination and creams tend to feel heavy
you want the shorter ingredient list, 12 entries with no oils
Pick the 92 cream if:
you want one step that is both snail mucin and moisturizer
your skin is normal to dry and an essence alone leaves it tight
you want a light cream to sit under sunscreen and makeup
Essence first. Thin, watery layers go before thicker ones, so the 96 goes after toner and the 92 on top, with sunscreen last in the morning. Our toner vs essence explainer covers where the essence step sits.
Can the 96 essence replace a moisturizer?
For most skin, no. Its list has humectants but no oils or emulsifiers, which is why its directions follow it with a moisturizer. Very oily skin may find the essence plus sunscreen enough during the day.
Are the COSRX snail products fragrance-free?
Neither ingredient list includes fragrance or essential oils. The essence page calls it fragrance-free, and the cream page says it is free from artificial fragrance. If you avoid a specific ingredient, read the full list on the box you receive.
Are COSRX Snail 92 and 96 vegan?
No. Snail secretion filtrate is an animal-derived ingredient, so neither product is vegan.
Is the 92 cream the same as the 96 essence in a jar?
No. The two share ten ingredients, but the cream adds an oil, two emulsifiers, fatty thickeners, dimethicone, xanthan gum and adenosine. That changes it from a pre-moisturizer layer into a moisturizer.
