Best snail mucin products: COSRX 96 vs 92 and six Korean alternatives compared
Updated October 22, 2026
For most people the best snail mucin is still the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence: 96.3% snail secretion filtrate, 12 ingredients and $9.62 for 100 ml, worn under the moisturizer you already own. Choose the COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream instead if you want snail mucin and moisturizer in one step, and look at TIAM's 180 ml water essence or Dr.G's Royal Black Snail Cream when the COSRX pair is out of stock or your skin wants something richer.
Both COSRX classics were out of stock at Sleepy Hello when we checked, so the six alternatives below are worth knowing. They run from a ginseng serum with 3% snail mucin to a 64% fermented snail serum with gold, and from about 5 cents to $1.43 per ml.
This is a researched comparison of current US brand and Sleepy Hello product information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these products; texture descriptions are the brands', and the buying advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
The shortlist: eight snail mucin products by filtrate percentage
Snail secretion filtrate is processed, filtered snail mucin. It works mainly as a humectant, an ingredient that draws water into the top layers of skin, so all of these are hydration steps first. Ordered by the snail content each brand states, with prices checked October 2026:
A higher percentage doesn't make a product better. It mostly tells you how little else is in the formula.
COSRX Snail 96 essence vs Snail 92 cream: which do you need?
Get the 96 essence if you already have a moisturizer you like; get the 92 cream if you want one product that hydrates and seals in a single step. They layer well, essence first and cream on top, but neither needs the other.
The 96 has 12 ingredients. After the filtrate come betaine (a humectant from sugar beets), butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium polyacrylate (a thickener), phenoxyethanol (a preservative), sodium hyaluronate, allantoin, ethyl hexanediol, carbomer, panthenol and arginine. There are no oils and no fragrance on the list. COSRX describes it as clear, stretchy and a little stringy as you pat it in.
The 92 adds what a moisturizer needs: caprylic/capric triglyceride (a light emollient oil), olive-derived emulsifiers, sodium hyaluronate at a stated 1,000 ppm, cetearyl alcohol (a fatty alcohol, not a drying one), stearic acid and dimethicone, with adenosine near the end. COSRX calls it a fast-absorbing, non-sticky jelly cream with a dewy finish, free from artificial fragrance.
For the 96, COSRX says to apply two to three pumps after cleansing and toning, pat in and follow with moisturizer, once or twice a day. For the 92, apply a small amount after toning, avoiding the eyes and mouth, and follow with sunscreen in the morning.
The 96 is the better value at about 10 cents per ml against 26 cents. Oily and combination skin usually gets enough from the essence plus a light moisturizer; drier skin gets more from the cream because it brings the emollients the essence lacks. Our COSRX Snail 96 review covers the essence in depth.
Six Korean snail mucin alternatives compared
These are alternatives, not additions. Pick the one that fills the step you want: a watery essence, a serum or a cream.
TIAM Snail & Azulene Water Essence: the closest swap for the 96
TIAM's water essence is the nearest thing to a cheaper COSRX 96. TIAM's current description states 81% snail secretion filtrate, while the ingredient list on our page still reads 87%, so check the box you receive. After the filtrate come butylene glycol, glycerin, hydroxyethylcellulose (a thickener), PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil (a solubilizer), beta-glucan, betaine, allantoin and panthenol. The azulene is sodium guaiazulene sulfonate at 15 ppm, a blue compound associated with chamomile.
TIAM labels it alcohol-free and fragrance-free, though the list includes chamomile flower oil. Apply after cleansing with hands or a cotton pad and pat in; TIAM suggests repeating in layers for extra soothing care. At $9.49 for 180 ml, it costs about half as much per ml as the 96.
COSRX Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence: snail plus niacinamide
The Dual Essence is a two-chamber bottle pairing 74.3% Triple Snail Complex with 5% niacinamide and glutathione. The list opens with snail secretion filtrate, butylene glycol, niacinamide, 1,2-hexanediol, betaine, panthenol, water and glycerin, then meadowfoam and sunflower seed oils, so it's slightly richer than the 96.
COSRX describes a silky, slightly elastic texture between a watery essence and a light serum. Press the pump slowly, mix one or two pumps in your palm, spread a thin layer after toner and follow with moisturizer. Choose it if dull-looking skin is your second concern; skip it if you already use a niacinamide serum.
Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin: ginseng first
Think of this as a ginseng serum that also contains snail. Beauty of Joseon's official product page lists ginseng root water at 63% and snail mucin at 3%. On our 30 ml bottle the list opens with Panax ginseng root water, water, butylene glycol, snail secretion filtrate, dipropylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, glycerin and niacinamide, with centella, mushroom extracts, adenosine and three forms of hyaluronic acid later.
It's described as fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Pat a few drops in morning and night, follow with moisturizer, and finish with sunscreen during the day. It's cheap to try, but at 3% snail it's the most expensive way here to buy snail mucin itself. Our Revive Serum review covers the ginseng side.
It's Skin Blue Snail Serum: a gel serum with ceramide
It's Skin Blue Snail Serum doesn't publish a snail percentage on our page; snail slime filtrate sits third, after water and butylene glycol. Then come glycereth-26 (a humectant), niacinamide, 1,2-hexanediol, betaine and adenosine, followed by centella, licorice root and turmeric root extracts, ceramide NP, panthenol and meadowfoam seed oil. Guaiazulene gives the blue color.
It's Skin describes a blue gel with a rich moisturizing feel and a moist, non-sticky finish. Use it at the serum step and tap it in. It was out of stock at our check. Pick it if you want a ceramide in the same layer as your snail.
Dr.G Royal Black Snail Cream: the richest option
Dr.G Royal Black Snail Cream is the one for dry skin. Water comes first on the list, then snail secretion filtrate, dipropylene glycol, glycerin, cyclohexasiloxane (a silicone that evaporates), cetearyl alcohol, caprylic/capric triglyceride, triethylhexanoin and niacinamide. Further down are beeswax, shea butter, tranexamic acid, honey extract and hydrolyzed royal jelly protein.
Dr.G calls the texture rich and viscous. Apply it as the last step and massage or pat it in; on dry days, Dr.G suggests a more generous layer as a sleeping pack. Oily skin will likely find it heavy, and the bee-derived ingredients matter if you avoid them.
Tonymoly Intense Care Gold24K Snail Serum: the splurge, with citrus oils
Tonymoly's Gold24K Snail Serum leads with yeast/snail mucilage ferment filtrate at 64%. Next are glycereth-26, water, dipropylene glycol, glycerin, niacinamide and trehalose, then lime, lemon peel, bergamot and orange peel oils plus eucalyptus leaf oil. Those fragrant plant oils sit high on the list, so skip it if you avoid fragrance or essential oils. It also lists peptides, gold at 40 ppm and colloidal gold at 20 ppb.
Tonymoly describes a lightweight, transparent, quick-absorbing texture. Apply after toner to face and neck, avoiding the eyes, then follow with lotion or cream, twice daily. At about 15 times the 96's price per ml, our take is that the gold is the line's identity, not a reason to pay more.
Can you use snail mucin with retinol or vitamin C?
Yes. Snail secretion filtrate is a hydrating ingredient, and none of these brands list a conflict with retinol or vitamin C on their product pages. The question is mostly order.
In the morning, apply a watery snail essence before a thicker vitamin C serum, unless your vitamin C product asks for clean, bare skin. Then moisturizer and sunscreen. The niacinamide in the Dual Essence, Revive Serum and Tonymoly serum sits comfortably alongside vitamin C.
At night, use the snail essence, then your retinol serum, then a moisturizer such as the 92 or the Dr.G cream. A moisturizer on top is the usual way to make a retinoid step feel more comfortable. If your retinoid is a prescription, ask the prescriber how to layer it. Our guides to Korean retinol and Korean vitamin C serums cover those steps.
Where does snail mucin go in a Korean skincare routine?
A snail essence goes after cleansing and toner, before serums and cream; a snail cream goes last, before sunscreen in the morning.
Cleanse.
Toner.
Snail essence: the COSRX 96, the TIAM or the Dual Essence.
Serum: the Revive Serum, Blue Snail Serum, Gold24K, or any other serum you use.
Moisturizer: the COSRX 92, or the Dr.G cream at night.
Sunscreen in the morning.
One snail product is plenty for most routines. If you use two, make them different steps, such as an essence and a cream. Our Korean essence guide compares other options for step three.
What is the best snail mucin for dry skin?
For dry skin, choose a snail cream, or a snail essence under a rich moisturizer, rather than an essence alone. Dr.G Royal Black Snail Cream is the richest here, with shea butter, beeswax and several emollients, and it doubles as a sleeping pack; the COSRX 92 is the lighter one-step version. Our Korean routine for dry skin shows what to pair them with.
How to choose, with Sleepy Hello prices checked October 2026:
It can, though the filtrate is rarely the only suspect. Snail secretion filtrate is a water-based humectant; the oils, butters and emollients around it vary far more between products. If you're breakout-prone, start with an oil-free essence such as the COSRX 96 rather than a rich cream, and add one new product at a time. None of these brands publish pore-clogging test results on our pages.
Is snail mucin cruelty-free?
It depends on the brand, and no snail product is vegan. Our COSRX 96 product page describes COSRX as a cruelty-free brand, and Beauty of Joseon shows a cruelty-free badge on its official Revive Serum page. TIAM, Dr.G, It's Skin and Tonymoly don't publish a cruelty-free statement on our pages, and the Dr.G cream also contains beeswax, honey extract and royal jelly protein.
Can you use snail mucin if you have a shellfish allergy?
Ask your doctor or an allergist first if you have a known allergy to snails or other mollusks, since some shellfish allergies include them. None of these brands publish allergy guidance on our pages. If a product causes itching, swelling or a rash, wash it off and stop using it.
Is COSRX snail mucin out of stock?
Both the 96 essence and the 92 cream were out of stock at Sleepy Hello when we checked in October 2026. Each product page has a notify option that sends one email when it returns, and the TIAM water essence was in stock as the closest swap.
