Korean skincare sets: SKIN1004 travel kit for beginners, Pyunkang Yul trio for gifts
Updated October 22, 2026
For most beginners, the best Korean skincare set is the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Travel Kit: five minis that run from cleansing oil to cream for $20.99, with no strong actives to manage. For a gift, the Pyunkang Yul Calming Line Gift Set is the better buy, because it holds a full-size toner, serum and cream for $25.99, less than those three bottles cost on their own.
This is a researched comparison of current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these sets; texture descriptions are the brands' own, and the buying advice comes from comparing contents, ingredient lists, directions, sizes and prices on sleepyhello.com.
What is the best Korean skincare set for beginners?
The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Travel Kit is our pick for a first set, because it covers every basic step from one line and each mini is big enough to judge. It holds Centella Light Cleansing Oil (30 ml), Centella Ampoule Foam (20 ml), Centella Toning Toner (30 ml), Centella Ampoule (30 ml) and Centella Soothing Cream (30 ml), for $20.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
The order is a double cleanse followed by three leave-on layers. SKIN1004's directions: massage a few pumps of oil over a dry face with dry hands, add a little water until it turns milky and rinse; lather the foam in wet palms and rinse; pat in the toner with a cotton pad or your palm; pat in the ampoule; finish with the cream.
The ampoule's ingredient list is short: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, centella asiatica extract, 1,2-hexanediol, cellulose gum and ethylhexylglycerin. The full-size page prints the centella extract at 30,000 ppm, or 3%. The toner adds niacinamide and gluconolactone, a PHA (polyhydroxy acid, a mild exfoliating acid) that SKIN1004 describes as giving gradual surface exfoliation. The cream, which SKIN1004 calls a honey-like gel cream, lists trehalose, tranexamic acid and a ceramide blend (ceramide NP, NG, AS, AP and EOP with cholesterol), plus peppermint leaf and ginger root extracts.
One caveat for scent-averse buyers: the cleansing oil's ingredient list includes bergamot, geranium and rose flower oils, with limonene and linalool. The other four minis list no fragrance. The kit has no sunscreen, so a beginner still needs one for mornings (see Quick answers below).
What comes in a Korean skincare travel kit?
A Korean skincare travel kit is usually four or five 20 to 30 ml minis that make one short routine, and the two SKIN1004 kits show the two common shapes: cleanser to cream, or leave-on hydration only. The Centella kit above includes both cleansers. The Hyalu-Cica Travel Kit skips cleansing and gives you four 30 ml leave-on steps for $16.99, checked October 2026: Brightening Toner, Blue Serum, Moisture Cream and Sleeping Pack.
The Hyalu-Cica line is built on centella asiatica leaf water and several forms of hyaluronic acid. The toner opens with centella leaf water, butylene glycol, glycerin, 1,2-hexanediol and niacinamide, then, after water and betaine, three hyaluronic acid forms: sodium hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. It also lists citric acid and capryloyl salicylic acid, which SKIN1004 calls gentle AHA and LHA. SKIN1004 describes the serum as a lightweight, non-sticky watery gel, the cream as airy and bouncy, and the sleeping pack as a very light watery gel that you leave on overnight.
Pick the Centella kit if you are starting from nothing or want a whole routine for a trip. Pick the Hyalu-Cica kit if you already own a cleanser you like, your skin feels dehydrated, or you want an overnight step. Neither kit includes sunscreen.
Mixsoon 9 Step Trial Kit: nine sachets for $1.89
The Mixsoon 9 Step Trial Kit is the cheapest way to see a whole Korean routine, at $1.89 for nine individual trial sachets, checked October 2026. It is a sampler, not a supply: the sachets hold 1 to 1.5 ml each, about 11 ml in total.
Inside are Bean Cleansing Oil (1.5 ml), Centella Cleansing Foam (1.5 ml), Centella Asiatica Toner (1.5 ml), four essences (Galactomyces Ferment, Bifida Ferment and Soondy Centella Asiatica at 1 ml each, plus Bean Essence at 1.5 ml), Bean Cream (1 ml) and Centella Sun Cream (1 ml). It is the only set here with sunscreen. The product page lists the sun cream at SPF 50+ PA++++, with chemical filters such as ethylhexyl triazone and bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine.
A few label details matter. The cleansing foam lists salicylic acid. The Bean Cream lists bergamot, lavender and chamomile flower oils, and the sun cream lists denatured alcohol, linalool and geraniol. Mixsoon's directions say to choose one of the four essences after toner rather than layering all four.
Our take: buy it to compare the four essences and the Bean Cream's texture before paying for a full size, such as the Mixsoon Bean Cream, 50 ml at $20.99 or the Mixsoon Centella Suncream, 50 g at $17.99. Think of the 1 ml sun cream sachet as a texture test, not sun protection for a trip.
Beauty of Joseon Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit: four serums, one step
The Beauty of Joseon Hanbang Serum Discovery Kit suits someone who already cleanses and moisturizes and wants to find the right serum. It holds four 10 ml bottles for $20.99, checked October 2026, and Beauty of Joseon says plainly that it covers the serum step only.
The kit page lists each formula's headline ingredients. Calming Serum pairs green tea leaf water (76%) with panthenol (2%). Glow Serum pairs propolis extract (60%) with niacinamide (2%). Glow Deep Serum pairs rice bran water (68%) with alpha-arbutin (2%). Revive Serum pairs ginseng root water (63%) with snail mucin (3%). The separate 30 ml Calming Serum page prints camellia sinensis leaf water at 50.9%, so check the box you receive if that number matters to you.
Beauty of Joseon describes the textures as ranging from watery (Calming) to cushiony (Glow) to slippery (Revive), and calls the kit fragrance-free. The directions are two or three drops patted into clean skin. Calming, Glow and Revive can go morning or evening; Glow Deep is evening only, and the brand suggests a patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
The kit doesn't save money. At $20.99 for 40 ml it works out to about $0.52 per ml, while a full 30 ml bottle such as Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide is $12.99, about $0.43 per ml. What it buys is a low-stakes way to choose before committing to one bottle: the full sizes of Calming Serum ($13.33), Glow Deep Serum ($12.99) and Revive Serum ($12.99) are all on the shelf.
Which Korean skincare set makes a good gift?
The Pyunkang Yul Calming Line Gift Set makes the most practical gift: full-size bottles, a gentle ingredient profile and a price below the singles. It contains Calming Deep Moisture Toner (150 ml), Calming Moisture Serum (30 ml) and Calming Moisture Barrier Cream (50 ml) for $25.99, checked October 2026. Pyunkang Yul positions the line for sensitive, easily reddened and acne-prone skin, and labels the set vegan and cruelty-free.
The ingredient lists fit that positioning. The toner opens with water, propanediol, glycerin, dipropylene glycol and panthenol, then lists citric acid, gluconolactone and willow bark extract alongside hyaluronic acid forms, centella extract and madecassoside. The serum adds allantoin, trehalose, two peptides (acetyl hexapeptide-8 and palmitoyl tripeptide-5) and ceramide NP. The cream builds on caprylic/capric triglyceride, isohexadecane and cetearyl alcohol, with ceramide NP, squalane and shea butter further down. None of the three lists fragrance. Pyunkang Yul's directions allow two or three thin toner layers on dry days, then serum and cream, morning and evening.
The Tonymoly Intense Care Gold 24K Snail Skincare Set of 3 is the splurge box at $108.99, checked October 2026. It holds a toner (140 ml plus a 20 ml mini), an emulsion (140 ml plus 20 ml) and a cream (45 ml plus 5 ml). Snail mucus filtrate is the theme: the toner lists it at 140,000 ppm (14%) right after water, and the cream lists it at 65%. The toner also includes niacinamide, adenosine, peptides and gold at 10 ppm, and its visible gold flakes come with mica, titanium dioxide and iron oxide on the list. The product page lists it for all skin types, especially dry, mature or tired-looking skin. Its toner lists lemon, orange, lime, bergamot and eucalyptus oils, so we'd give it to someone who enjoys scented, layered skincare rather than someone with easily irritated skin.
For a smaller gift, the Beauty of Joseon kit works well for someone who already has a routine. A third option, the AXIS-Y Biome Recharging Night Renewal Set ($20.99 for an 80 ml night balm and a 7 ml concentrate with 10% panthenol), was out of stock when we checked.
Is a skincare set cheaper than buying full sizes?
Only the full-size gift set is clearly cheaper; travel and trial kits cost less upfront but more per milliliter. Here is the math at Sleepy Hello prices, checked October 2026.
Tonymoly Gold 24K Snail: the toner, 140 ml ($34.99) and ($27.99) come to $62.98 on their own. The cream isn't sold separately at Sleepy Hello, so we can't price the whole set against singles.
The rule of thumb: buy a travel or trial kit to learn what you like or to pack light, and buy full sizes once you know. A gift set made of full-size bottles is the exception that saves money on day one. If you'd rather build a routine one product at a time, our best Korean skincare guide picks singles by step.
The Pyunkang Yul Calming Line Gift Set is the closest fit, because the brand positions it for sensitive skin and none of its three ingredient lists includes fragrance. The Beauty of Joseon kit is labeled fragrance-free, though the brand suggests a patch test for Glow Deep. The SKIN1004 Centella kit is a reasonable choice if you swap out the cleansing oil, which lists bergamot, geranium and rose oils. Add one new product at a time; our guide to Korean skincare for sensitive skin explains how.
Which set suits oily or acne-prone skin?
Pyunkang Yul names acne-prone skin and excess oil in the Calming Line's positioning, and SKIN1004 describes the Hyalu-Cica textures as light and watery. The Mixsoon foam lists salicylic acid if you want to sample a cleanser with an exfoliating acid.
Can you take a skincare travel kit on a plane?
Yes for the SKIN1004 kits, whose minis are 30 ml or less, and for the Mixsoon sachets. The Pyunkang Yul toner (150 ml) and the Tonymoly toner and emulsion (140 ml each) are over the usual 100 ml carry-on liquid limit, so pack those in checked luggage.
Is a trial kit enough to know if a product works for you?
A sachet tells you about texture, finish and scent, not much more. The 20 to 30 ml SKIN1004 minis and the 10 ml Beauty of Joseon bottles give you enough for repeated use before you decide on a full size.
Yes, for simple, low-cost centella care. Start with the Centella Ampoule, then pick Hyalu-Cica, Tone Brightening, Poremizing or Probio-Cica by skin need.
Yes, for simple hydration. Start with Bean Essence for rough skin, Galactomyces for dullness or Soondy Centella for redness. Sizes and prices compared.
