Mixsoon Bean Essence vs COSRX Snail 96: Mixsoon for texture, COSRX for hydration
Updated October 22, 2026
Pick Mixsoon Bean Essence if rough-feeling texture is your main complaint and you want a vegan, fragrance-free formula with an optional evening massage step. Pick COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence if you want a plain, humectant-heavy hydrating layer for morning and night, and you're fine with an animal-derived ingredient.
Both fill the same hydrating essence step, but they're built differently. Bean Essence is water, two humectants and four plant ferments; Snail 96 uses snail secretion filtrate in place of water, plus a short list of hydrators, comfort ingredients, thickeners and preservatives. That difference is what decides which one fits your routine.
This is a researched comparison of current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested either essence; texture descriptions come from the brands and our product listings, and the buying advice comes from comparing formulas, directions, sizes and prices.
What is the difference between Mixsoon Bean Essence and COSRX Snail Mucin?
Bean Essence is a fermented-plant essence pitched at hydration plus smoother-looking texture, while Snail 96 is a snail mucin essence pitched at hydration and a dewy finish. The ingredient lists show why.
A ferment extract is made by fermenting a plant with bacteria (Lactobacillus) or yeast (Saccharomyces), then extracting or filtering the result. Mixsoon's US product page lists seven ingredients for Mixsoon Bean Essence, 50 ml, in this order: water, propanediol, glycerin, Lactobacillus/soybean ferment extract, Lactobacillus/Punica granatum (pomegranate) fruit ferment extract, Saccharomyces/barley seed ferment filtrate and Lactobacillus/pear juice ferment filtrate. Propanediol and glycerin are humectants, meaning they draw water into the top layer of skin and help hold it there. Our product listing names the four ferments; Mixsoon's list is the complete one, so check it if you're avoiding a specific ingredient.
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, 100 ml has twelve ingredients: snail secretion filtrate, betaine, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium polyacrylate, phenoxyethanol, sodium hyaluronate, allantoin, ethyl hexanediol, carbomer, panthenol and arginine. Snail secretion filtrate is filtered mucin collected from snails, and COSRX states it makes up 96.3% of the formula, which is where the "96" comes from. Betaine, butylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate (a salt form of hyaluronic acid) and panthenol all bind moisture, while allantoin and panthenol are the comfort-focused pair. Carbomer and sodium polyacrylate are thickeners that give the essence its body, phenoxyethanol and ethyl hexanediol are preservatives, and arginine adjusts the pH.
Three practical differences follow from those lists:
Vegan or not. Mixsoon states Bean Essence is vegan. Snail 96 is built on an animal-derived filtrate.
Fragrance and alcohol. Mixsoon states Bean Essence is fragrance-free and alcohol-free. The COSRX list includes no fragrance and no ethanol either.
What each brand says it does. Mixsoon talks about hydration plus softening the look of rough texture and dead-skin buildup. COSRX talks about hydration, glow and calmer-looking skin.
Mixsoon also states a pH of 5 to 6 for Bean Essence. The COSRX listing we checked doesn't give one.
Which essence is better for texture and rough skin?
Mixsoon Bean Essence is the better match for rough-feeling texture, because it's the one formulated and directed for it. Mixsoon pairs the daily layer with an evening massage method: work a few pumps in with your fingertips, wipe away what lifts with a warm towel or toner pad, then moisturize.
Keep expectations in proportion. Neither list contains an AHA, BHA or PHA, and Mixsoon describes the formula as free from harsh exfoliants, so this isn't an acid exfoliant in essence form. The smoothing comes from the ferments plus the massage-and-wipe routine. If you already use an acid toner or a peeling gel (our Korean exfoliator guide compares them), you don't need Bean Essence for exfoliation, though you might still like it as a soft hydrating layer.
Snail 96 isn't positioned for texture. The COSRX two-week figures on our listing are about glow and visible redness, so choose it for hydration and a dewy finish rather than smoothing.
Which is better for dehydrated skin?
COSRX Snail 96 is the slightly better pick when dehydration is the only problem. Dehydrated skin is short on water rather than oil, so it responds to humectants, and most of the working ingredients after the snail filtrate in the COSRX list are humectants or comfort ingredients; the rest are thickeners and preservatives. COSRX also directs it for once- or twice-daily use, every day.
Bean Essence hydrates too, through glycerin and propanediol near the top of its list, and Mixsoon recommends it for dry, dehydrated or rough skin, including sensitive skin. The difference is focus. Bean Essence splits its job between hydration and texture; Snail 96 keeps its working ingredients on water-binding and comfort.
Our take: if your skin feels tight and thirsty by midday but isn't rough, start with the COSRX. If it feels tight and also bumpy or dull, Bean Essence covers both. Either way, an essence works best under a moisturizer that holds that water in. COSRX's directions and Mixsoon's massage method both end with moisturizer.
Should you use Mixsoon Bean Essence morning or night?
Use Bean Essence morning or night as a daily hydrating layer, and keep the massage method for the evening. Mixsoon gives separate directions for the two jobs.
Daily layer, morning or evening. Apply a few drops to the face (and neck, per our 50 ml listing) and tap gently until fully absorbed. Mixsoon's daily directions stop at tapping it in. Our routine suggestion: apply it after cleansing and toner, follow with moisturizer, and finish with sunscreen in the morning.
Evening massage method. Apply a few pumps, massage with your fingers until absorbed, wipe off the remaining residue with a warm towel or toner pad, then moisturize. Our 30 ml listing suggests this more intensive method one to two times a week; Mixsoon's US page doesn't give a weekly number. Use light pressure, and stop if rubbing leaves your skin stinging.
Mixsoon describes the texture as lightweight and quick-absorbing without greasiness.
The COSRX directions for Snail 96 are simpler: after cleansing and toning, use two to three pumps for the face (four to five with neck and chest), pat it in, then follow with moisturizer, once or twice daily, morning and night. Our COSRX listing describes the texture as clear, stretchy and a little stringy as you pat it in, settling to a soft, cushioned finish. If you're unsure where an essence sits next to toner, see toner vs essence.
Can you use Mixsoon Bean Essence and COSRX Snail 96 together?
Yes. Neither list contains an acid, retinoid or other strong active, so there's no ingredient clash to plan around. The cost of using both is time and product, and the finish can feel tackier.
The cleanest way to combine them is to give each a clear role:
Massage nights. Cleanse, do the Bean Essence massage and wipe-off, apply Snail 96 as your leave-on hydrating layer, then moisturizer.
Ordinary evenings. Toner, then whichever essence feels thinner on your skin, then the other, then moisturizer. The usual layering rule is thinnest to thickest.
Mornings. Pick one. Two essence layers under sunscreen add slip and drying time, and one essence plus moisturizer is usually enough.
If you'd rather build around one brand, Mixsoon Bean Cream, 50 ml ($20.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026) uses a similar soybean, pomegranate, barley and pear ferment blend in a moisturizer. Unlike the essence, its ingredient list includes bergamot, lavender and chamomile oils, which is worth knowing if you avoid fragrant oils.
Which essence is better value per ml?
On listed prices, COSRX Snail 96 is far cheaper per ml, but it was out of stock when we checked. At Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026:
For reference, Mixsoon's US site listed the 50 ml at $35 on the same check. Prices on both products move, so confirm the current price on the product page.
Within Mixsoon, the 50 ml is the better buy per ml, and the 30 ml makes sense as a trial if you're unsure about the texture or the massage routine. Dose matters too: COSRX suggests two to three pumps a time, while Mixsoon's massage method uses a few pumps and then wipes product away, so a bottle used that way runs out faster than one used only as a leave-on layer.
Pick Mixsoon Bean Essence if:
rough-feeling texture or dullness is the main reason you're buying
you want a vegan formula
you like the idea of a once- or twice-weekly evening massage step
Pick COSRX Snail 96 if:
you want the simplest hydrating layer for morning and night
price per ml decides it for you, once it's back in stock
you're comfortable with an animal-derived ingredient
Quick answers
Is Mixsoon Bean Essence vegan?
Yes, Mixsoon states it's vegan. COSRX Snail 96 isn't, because its main ingredient is snail secretion filtrate.
Does either essence contain fragrance?
No. Neither ingredient list includes fragrance or essential oils. Mixsoon also states Bean Essence is alcohol-free, and the COSRX list doesn't include ethanol.
Does Mixsoon Bean Essence help with blackheads?
Possibly a little, but don't buy it for that. Our 30 ml listing carries a Mixsoon figure for blackheads after two weeks of the massage method, but the comparison behind it isn't clearly described. Keep a BHA product as your main blackhead step and use Bean Essence for hydration and smoother-feeling skin.
Is Bean Essence the same as Mixsoon Mung Bean Seed Essence?
No. Mung Bean Seed Essence is a separate 100 ml Mixsoon product built around mung bean seed extract. Bean Essence is the 30 ml and 50 ml fermented-soybean formula compared here.
What does the 96 in COSRX Snail 96 mean?
It's the share of snail secretion filtrate: COSRX states 96.3% of the formula. It isn't a strength rating.
Do you still need a moisturizer after either essence?
Yes. COSRX's directions and Mixsoon's massage method both end with moisturizer, which sits on top and helps keep the water the essence brought in from evaporating. Mixsoon's daily directions stop at tapping the essence in, but we'd still follow it with moisturizer.
COSRX Propolis Synergy Toner ($17.99, 280 ml) is a good pick for dry or dehydrated skin; the Light Ampoule suits one-step routines. Skip if bee-allergic.
