SKIN1004 Centella Light Cleansing Oil: makeup and rinsing
Updated September 8, 2026
SKIN1004's cleansing instructions include a step that's easy to rush: add a little water while the oil is still on your face, work it into a milky emulsion, then rinse. If you're new to cleansing oils, that middle step is just as much a part of using the product as dispensing it.
Our buying view: Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil is worth considering if you want a liquid first cleanser for makeup and sunscreen removal, with the watery feel SKIN1004 describes. The main hesitation is its aromatic plant oils. It wouldn't be our first suggestion for someone specifically avoiding those ingredients, and we'd keep waterproof eye makeup as a separate buying question.
This review is based on current brand information, the US retail listing and published editorial reviews checked on September 8, 2026. We haven't tested the cleanser ourselves or turned customer ratings into a performance score.
The exact bottle this review covers
We're discussing the original , available on SKIN1004's official store in 30 and 200 mL sizes. The full-size bottle pictured has a pump. This is a rinse-off oil cleanser, distinct from the Centella Ampoule and Centella Ampoule Foam in the same range.
Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil
The current brand page describes a watery, light-brown oil for dissolving makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum. That's its intended job. A centella ingredient story shouldn't distract from whether it removes what you wear and rinses comfortably for you.
If you already have an evening cleanser that does both, there may be little to gain by adding another bottle. The reason to try an oil is a removal problem you'd like to solve, or a cleansing format you prefer.
What matters in the current formula
The ingredient lists on SKIN1004's current page and Ulta's US listing agree. They begin with ethylhexyl stearate, cetyl ethylhexanoate and sorbeth-30 tetraoleate, followed by caprylic/capric triglyceride. Centella extract sits alongside the blend's botanical oils.
For shopping purposes, look closely at these three groups:
Sunflower, olive and jojoba oils: part of the oil blend, rather than evidence that this cleanser will behave like a leave-on face oil.
Bergamot, geranium and rose oils: aromatic ingredients worth checking against your preferences and known sensitivities.
Limonene and linalool: also named on the current list. Don't stop reading at a retailer's short “centella” description.
Some older reviews use a different ingredient list, including a prominently stated centella percentage. We wouldn't carry that number across to every bottle now sold under the same name. If you avoid a particular ingredient, compare the actual pack with the current seller's list before buying; the product name alone doesn't settle a formula question.
SKIN1004 describes the cleanser as non-comedogenic. That is a brand claim, not a promise that nobody will experience clogged pores or a reaction. We also wouldn't predict your result from the presence of one plant oil alone.
Will it remove your makeup?
The brand positions the oil for makeup and sunscreen removal. Published first-person experiences offer a useful reminder that “makeup” covers many different formulas.
In an October 2025 Temporary Princess review, the writer described good removal of much of her makeup but difficulty with several mascaras. An April 2026 Damzel In This Dress review reported waterproof makeup removal while noting that eye makeup could take additional time or another cleanse. These are individual accounts, not a controlled comparison or a consensus about the current formula.
For your own purchase, identify the item that normally takes the most effort to remove. If it's a long-wear base, an oil cleanser may be a useful first step. If it's waterproof mascara, check that mascara's removal directions and choose an eye-area remover suited to it rather than planning to rub harder.
The US product precautions say to avoid contact with eyes. A reviewer's comfortable experience doesn't cancel that instruction. Don't treat claims of being gentle around the eye area as permission to get the cleanser into your eyes.
How to use it, including the milky stage
Follow the directions on your own bottle. SKIN1004's current instructions are:
Start with dry hands and a dry face. Dispense a few pumps.
Massage gently in circles to loosen makeup and surface debris.
Add a little water and continue gently until the oil becomes a light, milky emulsion.
Rinse completely with lukewarm water.
The brand doesn't specify an exact number of minutes for massage, so there's no need to turn this into a timed facial. Enough product to spread gently is more useful than trying to stretch a tiny amount across your face.
If the oil still feels like a heavy layer when you first splash it, revisit the water-and-emulsification step. If you still dislike the rinse after following the directions, that is useful information about the product's fit for you. You don't have to make it work through repeated washing.
The American Academy of Dermatology's face-washing guidance favors fingertips, gentle handling and lukewarm rinsing over scrubbing. For this oil's starting conditions, use the product-specific dry-face directions above.
Do you need a second cleanser afterward?
If you're double cleansing, this is the first step; your water-based face wash comes after the oil has been emulsified and rinsed away. You don't have to use SKIN1004's foam just because the bottles match. A familiar cleanser that suits your skin is a reasonable companion.
Whether you need two steps at all depends on what you're removing. Cleveland Clinic explains that an oil first cleanse can help with waterproof makeup and sunscreen, while many people do well with one thorough cleanse. Our double-cleansing guide helps work through that decision.
Don't add a morning oil cleanse simply because you've started using one at night. And if cleansing leaves your skin tight, itchy or uncomfortable, adding more washing isn't the goal. Stop using a product that irritates you; get advice if the problem persists.
A useful way to judge the first few uses
Keep the rest of your routine familiar so you can pay attention to the cleanser. Instead of waiting for a dramatic skin change, check three practical things:
Removal: are you still seeing foundation around the nose, tint near the hairline or visible pigment you expected to remove? Those leftovers point to the specific part of your removal routine that needs attention.
Rinsing: can you move from the oil stage to a milky emulsion and rinse without prolonged rubbing? The point is a manageable wash, not a particular amount of foam.
After-feel: once you're done, does your skin feel comfortable enough to continue your usual routine? Persistent burning, redness or itching is a reason to stop, not something to overlook because the cleanser was popular.
These are everyday observations, not a test of complete sunscreen removal or proof that a product prevents breakouts. They help you decide whether the format makes evenings easier.
Small bottle or full size?
The 30 mL size makes sense if you're uncertain about the feel or scent. It costs more per milliliter, but you commit to less product. The 200 mL pump is the more economical volume if you already know you like it.
At our check, SKIN1004's official size options listed $5.50 for 30 mL and $18.90 sale / $21 regular for 200 mL, before delivery and tax. At those displayed prices, that's about $1.83 versus $0.95 per 10 mL. Ulta listed the full-size 6.76 oz option at $25 for a single purchase. Prices and promotions can change, so compare the delivered total as well as the amount.
Consider it if a liquid makeup-removal step appeals, you like the idea of a lighter oil texture, and the aromatic oils fit your preferences. Look elsewhere if you specifically want to avoid those ingredients or already know you prefer a balm or cream cleanser.
For this bottle, the useful verdict will happen at the sink: the makeup you wore comes away, the oil rinses without a struggle, and washing doesn't become a chore. Those are better reasons to repurchase than wanting every step of your routine to say Centella.
