Korean cleansing oils: what to compare before you buy
Updated September 10, 2026
The best Korean cleansing oil for you is the one that handles what you wear, fits your fragrance preferences, and rinses comfortably without a long massage. Start with your hardest removal job: daily sunscreen, a full face of makeup, or stubborn eye products. Then compare the exact bottle's ingredient list and directions.
If avoiding perfume and aromatic essential oils is your priority, Haruharu Wonder's current Black Rice Moisture Cleansing Oil / Unscented is a useful starting point. If you're considering Anua, check whether you're buying the original or Mild version. They make different fragrance choices. The comparisons below explain those differences before you commit to a bottle.
This is a desk-researched buying guide based on current official product information, checked in September 2026. We haven't tested these oils or ranked their performance against one another. The shortlist offers distinct buying choices; it isn't a promise that one formula will suit everyone.
Start with what needs to come off
An oil cleanser earns its place when it makes your evening removal step easier. Think about an ordinary day rather than the heaviest makeup you've ever worn. If you mostly wear sunscreen and light base makeup, your requirements may be different from someone removing water-resistant sunscreen and long-wear eye makeup every night.
There is some useful research behind that distinction. In a small study involving 20 people, both a foaming cleanser and a cleansing oil removed the tested non-waterproof sunscreen effectively. The oil performed better on the tested waterproof sunscreen. That was a comparison of particular products, not proof that every sunscreen needs an oil cleanser or that every oil outperforms every face wash. Read the sunscreen-removal study.
If your existing cleanser already removes your usual products comfortably, you may have no removal problem to solve. If makeup remains, look for instructions that address that makeup type. A general promise to remove impurities tells you less than a clear statement about light base makeup or waterproof cosmetics.
Treat eye makeup as its own requirement. Don't assume that a facial cleansing oil is suitable for every mascara or eye area simply because it removes foundation. Check the bottle's eye-area directions and your makeup's removal instructions before choosing.
Four oils with useful differences
These comparisons use the named versions on the linked brand pages. A familiar product name or bottle color isn't enough to establish that a different listing has the same formula. Prices and availability can change, so neither determines the order here.
Haruharu Wonder Black Rice Moisture Cleansing Oil / Unscented
Consider it when your first filter is fragrance. The current official formula contains nine ingredients, including rice bran, sunflower, olive, jojoba and macadamia oils. The brand identifies it as fragrance-free, and the published list contains no aromatic essential oils. The page offers 150 mL and 30 mL options. Check Haruharu Wonder's current formula.
That makes it a straightforward candidate to investigate when you've ruled out perfumed cleansers. It doesn't establish that it will feel light enough for you, remove your particular mascara, or cause no reaction. A smaller bottle is a useful first purchase if available. Read the full list even when it is short; ingredient count alone isn't a reason to trust or reject a cleanser.
Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil
Consider the original when added fragrance is acceptable to you. The US formula begins with ethylhexyl palmitate and includes fragrance as well as heartleaf extract. Its directions call for two to three pumps on a dry face, emulsifying with water, rinsing and following with a water-based cleanser. See Anua's original cleansing oil.
The important buying question is whether that scented, two-step approach fits your evening. The heartleaf name shouldn't override a fragrance preference or a known ingredient sensitivity. Our heartleaf ingredient guide provides background on the plant and its evidence; it isn't evidence that this particular oil will prevent breakouts.
Anua Heartleaf Pore Cleansing Oil Mild
Consider Mild separately from the original. Anua's US page labels this 200 mL version fragrance-free, but its ingredient list includes rosemary leaf oil. It also starts with a different ingredient, ethylhexyl stearate. This is a separate formula, rather than the original with a softer description. Compare the Mild version's ingredient list.
That distinction matters if your preference is specifically to avoid added perfume, or if you're also avoiding aromatic essential oils. For the second preference, rosemary still belongs in your decision. The word “Mild” doesn't make the product an automatic match, and the brand's fragrance-free label doesn't mean the ingredient list is free of aromatic plant oils.
Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil
Consider it for light, non-waterproof base makeup if aromatic oils suit your preferences. The current official US-facing page lists 210 mL, with soybean oil first and sage, mugwort and basil oils among the ingredients. Its FAQ specifically describes removal of non-waterproof light base makeup. Read Beauty of Joseon's current product details.
That stated use makes it a less direct match if waterproof mascara is the main problem you're trying to solve. Check the current list instead of relying on older ingredient summaries. And keep your reason for buying focused on cleansing: a ginseng name doesn't establish an anti-aging result from a rinse-off product. Our ginseng ingredient guide explains why evidence for different ginseng materials doesn't transfer automatically.
Read fragrance claims in two passes
First, look for “fragrance” or “parfum” in the full ingredient list. Then look for aromatic plant oils you want to avoid. Those are two different checks, as the Anua Mild example shows.
The American Academy of Dermatology advises people who react to fragrance to choose fragrance-free products, while remaining cautious about “unscented” products and botanical ingredients that may contain fragrance-related materials. That is why the front label is a starting point rather than the whole answer. See the AAD's product-selection advice.
You don't need to reject scent simply because someone else avoids it. A fragrance preference, a dislike of a particular smell, and a diagnosed allergy are different circumstances. If you already know an ingredient causes a reaction, use that exact information when checking the list. A reassuring product name shouldn't overrule it.
Judge the rinse as carefully as the removal
The useful question isn't only whether the oil spreads easily. It's whether you can finish cleansing without repeatedly washing to feel comfortable.
For example, Haruharu's instructions begin with dry hands and a dry face, followed by adding a little water to turn the oil milky, then rinsing thoroughly. Anua's original uses the same dry application and emulsifying sequence before its second cleanser. Follow the directions for the bottle you buy; don't start with a wet face out of habit. Haruharu's application steps and Anua's instructions show the sequence.
When assessing a new oil, keep three observations separate:
Removal: Is the makeup you intended to remove still visible?
Rinsing: Did you add water as directed and rinse the whole face, including the hairline and jaw?
Comfort: Does your skin feel comfortable once the cleansing routine is finished?
A milky appearance is a step in the process, not proof that everything has been removed. If visible makeup remains, revisit the product's intended use before adding more pressure or extending the massage. The AAD recommends using fingertips and avoiding scrubbing because it can irritate skin. Read its face-washing guidance.
Skin type doesn't choose the bottle for you
If your skin is oily, decide whether your priority is a lighter handling texture, easier rinsing, or removing long-wear products. Those are useful questions to put to a cleanser. “Pore control” on a label doesn't answer all three, and this desk comparison can't predict which oil will feel best on your face.
If your skin feels dry after cleansing, assess the complete wash routine, including any second cleanser. Buying an oil described as nourishing won't tell you how that pairing will feel. Likewise, don't keep using an uncomfortable product because its headline ingredient sounds soothing.
Keep expectations small and observable: removal, rinse and comfort. We aren't choosing these oils as treatments for acne, persistent blackheads or a skin condition. If those concerns are driving the purchase, separate the cleansing decision from the treatment advice you may need.
Compare the bottle and the real cost
An easy bottle can matter more than another botanical on the label. Think about where you'll use it: a crowded sink, a shower shelf, or a bag that travels with you. Check the closure and dispensing format for the size you're buying; a mini may work differently from the full-size pump.
A pump may fit your evening habits better than scooping a balm. If controlling a runny liquid sounds inconvenient, that is a reasonable reason to reconsider the format. Neither preference establishes which formula removes more makeup.
For value, compare cost per 100 mL at checkout. As a calculation example, a $20 bottle containing 200 mL costs $10 per 100 mL; a $15 bottle containing 100 mL costs $15 per 100 mL. These are illustrative prices, not current offers. Include shipping if it changes the purchase.
For a first bottle, the lowest total commitment may matter more than the lowest unit price. For a repeat purchase, a larger size can make sense once you know the product fits your routine. Avoid assuming that identical pump counts mean identical amounts across brands.
Make a shortlist you can actually use
Before checking out, write one sentence: “I need to remove ___, I want to avoid ___, and I'm willing to follow ___ cleansing steps.”
For sunscreen and light makeup with a preference against both perfume and aromatic essential oils, investigate the current Haruharu formula first. If Anua interests you, compare original and Mild using their actual ingredient lists. If Beauty of Joseon appeals, make sure its stated light-makeup use matches your main removal need.
Introduce one new cleanser at a time. The AAD recommends trying a product on a small area twice daily for seven to ten days, keeping rinse-off products on only as directed for that trial. Stop using it if a reaction develops. Its full testing instructions explain the process and when to seek help.
The bottle worth keeping is the one that makes your ordinary evening easier: the right removal job, an acceptable formula, and a rinse you're comfortable repeating.
