When to use vitamin C serum: morning, before SPF, and what to pair it with
Updated October 22, 2026
Use vitamin C serum in the morning, on clean skin right after toner, then moisturizer, then sunscreen as the last step. Night works too if a formula stings under makeup, as long as it doesn't share that evening with retinol or an exfoliating acid.
Niacinamide and snail mucin can sit in the same routine as vitamin C, and three of the serums below already put niacinamide in the bottle. Retinol belongs in the other half of the day, which is also how the brands write their directions.
This is a researched how-to built from current US brand and retailer information, checked October 2026. We haven't worn or tested these serums; texture notes are the brands' own, and the advice comes from comparing each formula's ingredient list, stated strength and written directions.
Should you use vitamin C serum in the morning or at night?
Morning is the usual choice. SOME BY MI tells you to use its Galactomyces vitamin C serum in the morning after toner, and COSRX frames its 23% serum as a daytime step finished with sunscreen. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, so a layer under your daily sunscreen is the natural place for it.
Night is fine when mornings don't work. Goodal and Anua write directions for morning and evening use, and Klairs and Medicube only ask that you add sunscreen when you wear their serums in daylight. If you use retinol or an AHA or BHA exfoliant in the evening, though, keep vitamin C in the morning so they never share a routine.
Do you apply vitamin C before or after moisturizer?
Before. Every vitamin C serum in this guide goes on after toner and before moisturizer, and the morning ends with sunscreen. Thin, watery layers go first and creams last, and vitamin C serums are among the thinnest things you'll apply.
Cleanse. A gentle cleanser or a water rinse is enough in the morning.
Toner. Apply your usual toner and let it settle.
Vitamin C serum. Use the amount on your bottle: Klairs says three to four drops, COSRX two to three drops after a gentle shake. Pat it in, away from the eyes. Klairs says the finish should feel dry rather than tacky, a useful sign it's ready for the next layer.
Other serums or essences. Snail mucin, or a niacinamide serum if you use one, goes here.
Moisturizer. Each vitamin C brand here names moisturizer or cream as the next step.
Sunscreen. Finish the morning with broad-spectrum sunscreen as the last skincare step. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics, 50 ml is labeled SPF50+ PA++++ and written to go on generously, reapplied at least every two hours. It's $12.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
If your skin reacts easily, Klairs suggests stirring a few drops of the Vitamin Drop into your moisturizer for the first couple of weeks before applying it by itself. Medicube similarly asks people new to vitamin C to begin gradually.
Which vitamin C serum suits your routine?
These serums differ most in the form of vitamin C and how much the brand states. Pure vitamin C appears on a label as ascorbic acid; sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid are derivatives, related forms brands often choose for stability. A bigger percentage doesn't tell you which one your skin will be comfortable with. If dark spots are your main reason for buying, our Korean skincare guide for dark spots covers the wider routine.
Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop: a gentle 5% start
Dear, Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop, 35 ml is a 5% pure vitamin C serum. Its list opens with water, propylene glycol and ascorbic acid, then hydroxyethylcellulose (a thickener), centella asiatica extract and yuzu (citrus junos) extract. The ingredient list includes orange oil, lavender oil and limonene, so it isn't fragrance-free. It's $17.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
COSRX The Vitamin C 23 Serum: high strength for experienced users
COSRX The Vitamin C 23 Serum, 20 ml states 23% pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid), with tocotrienol (a vitamin E form), hyaluronic acid and allantoin named alongside it; COSRX doesn't print the full ordered ingredient list on the pages we checked. The directions ask for a patch test, refrigeration after opening and use within two months, and COSRX warns it may sting or flush at first. It's $16.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
SOME BY MI Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum: a fermented base
SOME BY MI Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum, 30 ml is built on 75% galactomyces ferment filtrate, a yeast-fermented liquid. Ascorbic acid is listed at 30,000 ppm, which works out to 3%, with niacinamide close behind. The list includes bergamot and lavender oils, and SOME BY MI says to finish the bottle within twelve months of opening. It's $19.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Goodal Green Tangerine VitaC Dark Spot Care Serum: a derivative with tone partners
Goodal Green Tangerine VitaC Dark Spot Care Serum contains 70% green tangerine extract, 4% niacinamide, 2% arbutin and ascorbyl glucoside, a vitamin C derivative whose percentage Goodal doesn't state. The brand describes a lightweight, light-yellow gel. The ingredient list includes bergamot, lavender, lemon peel, ylang ylang and orange peel oils. It's $28.00 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Medicube Deep Vita C Capsule Serum: a vitamin C blend with niacinamide
Medicube Deep Vita C Capsule Serum, 30 ml pairs 77% sea buckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides) water with 5% niacinamide and visible capsules that melt as you massage. Medicube says it uses six vitamin C forms, including ascorbic acid and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, but doesn't publish a total vitamin C percentage. The list includes citron peel, rosemary, fennel and coriander oils. It's $20.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum: for readers who want both
Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Dark Spot Correcting Serum, 30 ml isn't a vitamin C serum, but it suits readers who want niacinamide and a little vitamin C in one step. It states 10% niacinamide, 4% tranexamic acid (TXA) and 2% arbutin, lists 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid further down, and is labeled fragrance-free. It's $23.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026.
Can you use niacinamide with vitamin C?
Yes. SOME BY MI, Goodal and Medicube each put niacinamide and vitamin C in the same bottle, and Anua's niacinamide serum includes a vitamin C derivative. The older advice to keep the two apart doesn't match how these brands formulate today.
If you want a separate niacinamide serum alongside vitamin C, layer it after the vitamin C has absorbed, or use vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night. Anua writes its serum for morning and evening use, before oils and moisturizers.
One label detail: Anua's list includes betaine salicylate, a relative of salicylic acid, far down the list. Klairs asks you to keep AHA and BHA out of the Vitamin Drop's routine, so splitting those two between morning and night is the cautious choice. For more options, see our niacinamide serum guide.
Can you use retinol and vitamin C in the same routine?
Yes, in the same day but not the same step: vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. COSRX says to keep its 23% serum apart from retinol in the same layer, and Goodal says to alternate routines if you use retinoid products.
Celimax The Vita-A Retinol Shot Tightening Serum, 30 ml shows how the split works. It's an evening serum with 0.1% pure retinol, and Celimax asks people new to retinol to use it every other night for the first two weeks, with sunscreen the next morning. It's $17.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026. Our Korean retinol guide compares other evening options. If you use a prescription retinoid, ask your clinician before adding a high-strength vitamin C serum.
Can you use snail mucin with vitamin C?
Yes. Snail secretion filtrate is a hydrating ingredient, and none of the vitamin C brands here list it as a conflict. Apply vitamin C right after toner, as its directions say, then the snail layer, then moisturizer.
Beauty of Joseon Revive Serum: Ginseng + Snail Mucin, 30 ml lists ginseng root water, water, butylene glycol and snail secretion filtrate first, and Beauty of Joseon writes it for morning and night. It's $12.99 at Sleepy Hello, checked October 2026. The COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, 100 ml is 96.3% snail secretion filtrate, placed after toner and before heavier serums and creams; it was out of stock when we checked in October 2026.
Quick answers
Do you need sunscreen after vitamin C serum?
Yes. A vitamin C serum isn't a sunscreen and carries no SPF, and every brand in this guide tells you to finish a daytime routine with sunscreen. Anua specifies SPF 30 or higher when you use its serum during the day.
Can you use vitamin C serum every day?
Usually, yes. COSRX and Medicube both describe daily use while suggesting a slower start if your skin is new to vitamin C. If a serum stings and that doesn't settle, use it less often, and stop if the discomfort continues.
How do you know if vitamin C serum has gone bad?
Pure ascorbic acid darkens as it reacts with air, light and warmth. Klairs says a pale straw tint is normal but to stop once it turns orange or brown, and SOME BY MI says to watch for noticeable darkening or a changed smell. Close the cap firmly and store the bottle somewhere cool and dark.
How to use azelaic acid: apply after toner on dry skin, start once or twice a week and finish with SPF. Compare Anua, Medicube and Centellian24 10% serums.
